Class G Airspace
Purpose: the only category of uncontrolled airspace in the United States. It essentially encompasses any airspace that has not been designated as Class A, B, C, D, or E.
Because it is uncontrolled, Air Traffic Control (ATC) has neither the authority nor the responsibility to manage or separate traffic within it. Class G is the ultimate "see and avoid" environment, heavily utilized by agricultural pilots, drone operators, and general aviation pilots flying in remote regions or at very low altitudes. Here are the specific parameters, requirements, and rules for operating within Class G airspace:
Vertical Limits: Typically extends from the surface up to the floor of the overlying controlled airspace (which is almost always Class E).
In most areas of the country, Class G goes from the surface up to 1,200 feet AGL.
Around many airports with instrument approaches, Class E drops down to protect traffic, meaning Class G only goes from the surface up to 700 feet AGL.
In extremely rare, remote locations, Class G can extend all the way up to 14,500 feet MSL.
Charting: The "Blank" Space
Class G is not explicitly drawn with its own lines on VFR Sectional Charts. Instead, it is identified by:
The absence of controlled airspace markings
looking at the borders of the faded magenta (700' AGL Class E floor) and faded blue (1,200' AGL Class E floor)
Legend Meaning: Class G is uncontrolled airspace. It is not explicitly drawn with its own dedicated colored line. Instead, it is defined by the absence of controlled airspace, i.e., if you are outside a dashed magenta line (Class E surface) and inside the faded side of a magenta-shaded ring, Class G exists from the surface up to 699 feet AGL. At 700 feet AGL, it transitions into Class E
Entry Requirements: No clearance, flight plan, or radio communication is required for either VFR or IFR aircraft. You can fly completely anonymously.
Speed Limits: Below 10,000 feet MSL, the standard maximum speed is 250 knots. However, because Class G is close to the ground, pilots must always fly at a speed that allows adequate time to see and avoid other traffic.
Weather Minimums (VFR): Because there is no ATC to separate traffic, VFR weather minimums are highly dynamic and depend on altitude and whether it is day or night. They are generally much lower than controlled airspace to allow pilots to maneuver close to the ground:
Pilot Certification: There are no specific pilot certificate restrictions. Student pilots frequently utilize Class G airspace for maneuvers, local flights, and rural airport practices.
Communication Equipment: None required. Pilots are, however, highly encouraged to use a VHF radio to broadcast their intentions on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) when operating near non-towered airports
Transponder & Surveillance: A transponder or ADS-B Out is not required inside Class G airspace, provided you stay below 10,000 feet MSL (and are not underneath a Class B/C shelf or inside a 30 NM Mode C Veil).
