Class C Airspace is designed to regulate traffic around moderately busy airports that have an operational control tower, a radar approach control, and a significant volume of commercial airline traffic (such as Austin-Bergstrom, Nashville, or Buffalo).
While not as large or strictly regulated as Class B, Class C still requires active radar monitoring to manage the flow of aircraft safely. It is typically structured like a smaller, two-layered upside-down wedding cake. Here are the specific parameters, requirements, and rules for operating within Class C airspace:
Vertical Limits: * The Core surface area extends from the surface up to 4,000 feet Above Airport Elevation (AAE)
The Shelf area typically extends from 1,200 feet up to 4,000 feet AAE
Lateral Limits: * The inner Core has a radius of 5 nautical miles (NM) from the primary airport
The outer Shelf has a radius of 10 nautical miles (NM)
There is also an un-charted Outer Area extending to 20 NM where ATC provides radar services to participating pilots.

Class C airspace is explicitly depicted on VFR Sectional Charts and Terminal Area Charts using solid magenta lines

Like Class B, it uses fraction-style numbers to denote the altitude ceiling and floor, but they are printed in magenta (e.g., 40/SFC means from the surface up to 4,000 feet).
Two-Way Radio Communication Entry Requirement: Unlike Class B, you do not need an explicit clearance statement to enter Class C. However, you must establish two-way radio communication before entering. This means ATC must acknowledge your aircraft by its specific tail number or call sign (e.g., "Cessna 172SP, standby" counts as establishing communication, and you may enter. If they say "Aircraft calling, standby," you have not established communication and must stay out).
Speed Limits: * The speed limit inside Class C airspace is 200 knots if you are at or below 2,500 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) and within 4 NM of the primary airport.
Weather Minimums (VFR): Because traffic density is lower than Class B, standard controlled airspace minimums apply:
Visibility: 3 statute miles.
Cloud Clearance: 3-152 rule (500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally away from clouds).
Pilot Certification: There are no specific pilot certificate restrictions. Student pilots are fully permitted to operate, land, and take off within Class C airspace.
Communication Equipment: A two-way radio capable of communicating with ATC.
Transponder & Surveillance: A functioning Mode C or Mode S transponder and ADS-B Out capability are required within the lateral boundaries and vertically above the Class C airspace ceiling (up to 10,000 feet MSL). Unlike Class B, there is no 30 NM "veil" at the surface; the requirement is strictly within and above the designated Class C airspace cylinders.
