Class B Airspace is designed to protect the nation’s busiest commercial airports (such as LAX, JFK, or ORD). It is tailored to handle high-density, high-speed commercial jet traffic and is much more restrictive than lower airspace tiers.
Think of Class B as an upside-down wedding cake, with layers that expand horizontally as you climb higher, allowing arriving and departing jets to remain entirely within protected airspace. Here are the specific parameters, requirements, and rules for operating within Class B airspace:
Vertical Limits: Typically begins at the surface around the primary airport and extends up to 10,000 feet Mean Sea Level (MSL). Some exceptionally high-altitude locations (like Denver) may extend up to 11,000 or 12,000 feet MSL.
Lateral Limits: Individually tailored for each major airport, usually consisting of a core radius of 5 to 10 nautical miles (NM) at the surface, with outer shelves expanding out to 20 or 30 NM at higher altitudes.
Charting: Solid Blue Lines
Class B airspace is explicitly depicted on VFR Sectional Charts and Terminal Area Charts (TAC) using solid blue lines
Inside each sector, you will see blue fraction-style numbers (e.g., 100/40 ), representing the ceiling and floor of that specific layer in hundreds of feet MSL (e.g., from 4,000 feet up to 10,000 feet).
Explicit ATC Clearance Required: You cannot simply enter Class B by talking to Air Traffic Control. You must hear the controller state your specific tail number and the exact phrase: "Cleared to enter Class B airspace." Hearing "radar contact" or your call sign is not authorization to enter.
Speed Limits: Inside Class B airspace (or below the floor of a Class B shelf), the maximum speed is 250 knots.
If you are flying in a designated VFR corridor through Class B airspace, the speed limit is restricted to 200 knots.
Weather Minimums (VFR): Because ATC closely tracks all radar targets in this zone, VFR weather requirements are relatively relaxed compared to other controlled airspace:
Visibility: 3 statute miles.
