Class E Airspace is the "everywhere else" category of controlled airspace. If controlled airspace isn't designated as Class A, B, C, or D, and it is above the ground, it is Class E.
Purpose: Class E exists to provide instrument flight rule (IFR) aircraft with air traffic control separation and vectoring in areas that do not have active control towers. It is vast, spanning most of the United States at various altitudes.
Here are the specific parameters, requirements, and rules for operating within Class E airspace:
Vertical Limits: * Standard Floor: In most areas, Class E begins at 1,200 feet Above Ground Level (AGL).
Transition Areas: Around non-towered airports with instrument approaches, the floor drops to 700 feet AGL to protect incoming IFR traffic.
Surface Areas: At some airports, Class E extends all the way down to the surface.
High-Altitude: Class E also exists from the top of Class D/C/B airspace up to 18,000 feet MSL, and then starts again above Flight Level 600 ($60,000\text{ feet}$).
Lateral Limits: It blankets the vast majority of the United States.
Charting: On VFR Sectional Charts:
Class E, starting at the surface, is a Dashed Magenta Line
Class E, starting at 700 feet AGL, is a Thick Magenta Shading (Faded Edge). The faded side points toward the area where Class E begins at 700 feet (usually surrounding an airport to protect instrument approach paths).
Class E, starting at 1,200 feet AGL, is a Thick Blue Shading (Faded Edge)

Entry Requirements: No clearance or communication is required for VFR pilots. You can fly right through it without talking to anyone. IFR pilots must be on an active IFR flight plan and in communication with ATC.
Speed Limits: * Below 10,000 feet MSL, the speed limit is 250 knots.
At or above 10,000 feet MSL, there is no 250-knot restriction (aircraft can fly up to Mach 1).
Weather Minimums (VFR): Because high-altitude aircraft move much faster, weather visibility and cloud clearance rules get stricter once you climb high:
Below 10,000 feet MSL: 3 statute miles visibility, and the 3-152 rule (500' below, 1,000' above, 2,000' horizontal from clouds).
At or Above 10,000 feet MSL: 5 statute miles visibility, and the 5-111 rule (1,000' below, 1,000' above, 1 statute mile horizontal from clouds).
Pilot Certification: There are no specific pilot certificate restrictions. Student pilots fly in Class E airspace constantly during their cross-country training.
Communication Equipment: None required for VFR aircraft.
Transponder & Surveillance: A transponder or ADS-B Out is generally not required below 10,000 feet MSL (unless you are within a Mode C Veil or crossing a Class B/C shelf). However, a transponder and ADS-B Out are required at and above 10,000 feet MSL (provided you are also above 2,500 feet AGL).
