Class D Airspace
Purpose: Smaller, regional airports that have an operational control tower but lack a dedicated radar approach control, or have lower traffic volumes than a Class C airport.
Unlike the "wedding cake" structure of Class B and C, Class D is generally a single, simple cylinder of airspace stretching from the surface up to a specific altitude, protecting arrivals and departures in the immediate vicinity of the airfield. Here are the specific parameters, requirements, and rules for operating within Class D airspace:
Vertical Limits: Generally extends from the surface up to 2,500 feet Above Airport Elevation (AAE). The ceiling is tailored to the specific airport and is rounded to the nearest 100 feet.
Lateral Limits: Typically forms a cylinder with a radius of 4 to 5 nautical miles (NM) centered on the primary airport. It may feature arrivals extensions (extensions to the cylinder) to protect instrument approach paths.

The ceiling is indicated by a number enclosed in a dashed blue box (e.g., [25], which means the ceiling is 2,500 feet MSL). A minus sign before the number (e.g., [-25]) means the airspace goes up to, but does not include, that altitude.
Two-Way Radio Communication Entry Requirement: Similar to Class C, an explicit clearance is not required to enter. You must, however, establish two-way radio communication with the control tower prior to entry. Communication is established the moment the controller responds using your aircraft's specific tail number or call sign (e.g., "Arrow 321G, standby" allows entry; "Aircraft calling, standby" does not).
Speed Limits: The speed limit inside Class D airspace is 200 knots if you are at or below 2,500 feet Above Ground Level (AGL) and within 4 NM of the primary airport.
Weather Minimums (VFR): Standard controlled airspace VFR minimums apply:
Visibility: 3 statute miles.
Cloud Clearance: 3-152 rule (500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontally away from clouds).
Pilot Certification: There are no specific pilot certificate restrictions. Student pilots are fully permitted to operate, land, and take off within Class D airspace, provided they have standard tower operations training.
Communication Equipment: A two-way radio capable of communicating with the control tower.
Transponder & Surveillance: Unlike Class B and Class C, a Mode C/Mode S transponder or ADS-B Out is not universally required within Class D airspace, unless the Class D happens to sit underneath a Class B "wedding cake" shelf or within a Mode C Veil.
