Kindergarten Videos

I hope you enjoy these videos from our school year.

*FYI - THIS WEB PAGE IS BEST VIEWED FROM A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP - WHEN VIEWING FROM A MOBILE DEVICE SOME IMAGES MAY APPEAR TO BE CUT OFF.

Some formats that I use to create these videos give me control over the music volume when students are talking and some do not. I apologize if some students are harder to hear.

Learning about Inventions

We have been learning in the Kindergarten homerooms and in science class about inventions and how they solve a problem. The girls are working together (by class) to help solve a problem for a member of our AIS community.

Mrs. Slezak's class interviewed Mrs. Elizardi, Head of Lower School, and one of the things we learned was that there were students and teachers who want to visit her during the day but she is often busy. The girls created a message board to help her. She also needed help naming her owl puppet. The girls voted and decided her name should be...OLIVIA! (Olivia the Owl) The videos posted in this section show a portion of the initial interview and then the presentation of the inventions / solutions.

Mrs. Berg's class interviewed Mrs. Seals, the Assistant Head of Academics and Inclusive Excellence. She shared that she was trying to do her best to keep healthy during the sick season. The girls created a bucket of supplies to help keep her table surfaces clean, to clean her dishes, and a sponge with a rubber band invention to wipe down other surfaces. The girls also included a water bottle for her to stay hydrated, an apple to stay healthy, and tissues - just in case! Lastly, the invention also includes an owl notepad and weekly calendar to help her keep organized with all of her meetings.

Both Mrs. Elizardi AND Mrs. Seals have plants in their office that they BOTH mentioned they sometimes forget to water. With the help of our Agnes Irwin clay expert, Ms. Siembora our awesome art teacher, the girls created these Plant Watering Devices to keep the soil moist for the plants in both Mrs. Elizardi's and Mrs. Seals' offices.

The last video in this section has the girls' reflections of this experience! They have such kind hearts and displayed empathy while creating a solution to a problem for another person. We are so proud of them!

Hibernating Bears

We combined library and science class to study hibernation. The girls each brought in a bear from home and brought it into class. We began by learning about what bears do to prepare to hibernate. We then learned about our resting and active heart rates and learned that a bear's heart rate slows WAY down when it hibernates. The girls then went on a "hunt" around the library to collect food for their bear and then we hibernated in caves we made out of blankets and sheets. The girls quietly read to their bears. We had a great time!

Science & Art Together - Winter Animals

We combined science and art class and created clay figures of winter animals. The girls looked at pictures of animals that migrate, hibernate, or adapt and picked an animal to create. Their animals will go in the kiln and then they will paint and glaze them before they go home. The girls will also create an imaginary habitat for their clay animals.

S.T.E.A.M. Project - Designing Boats

For this S.T.E.A.M. project, the Kindergarten girls were posed a question: How can we, as engineers, design a boat to travel across a tank from end to end? The girls used foam boat hulls and then decided how many sails to put on their boat, what shapes to use, how high the sails should be, where they should be placed, and they also decorated their boats. On a separate day we then went to the Upper School rowing tanks and with the help of two large fans we set sail. We all had a great time! :)

The 4 Seasons

The girls have been learning about the 4 seasons in science class. In this video they are sharing what they know in front of a green screen. Then we superimposed seasonal images behind them. They had a great time, learned a lot, and were very focused! Great job!

Leaf Animals

As part of our study of the 4 seasons, the girls explored the AIS campus looking for fall leaves of many sizes, shapes, and colors. I then showed them a leaf press and how the leaves turn out differently when they are dried and pressed versus just left out to dry. We then created LEAF ANIMALS with the dried leaves. This video shows the girls wonderful creations!

Field Trip - The 5 Senses

Kindergarten girls went on a field trip to Lankenau Hospital to their Health Education Center to learn about our 5 senses. Please watch this video of the girls from the trip. My favorite quote of the day from one of the Kindergarten students while we were at Lankenau, "I never felt more alive!"

Science & iWonder: 5 Senses!

Today we worked in science with Mrs. Walker! We had 2 stations to learn about the 5 senses. In one station the girls used the 3Doodler, which is a 3D printing pen, to doodle the body parts associated with the 5 senses. We put these 3D doodled body parts on a real potato and created a 5 senses Ms. Potato Head. In the other station the girls worked with the KIBO Robots. They used the mindset of engineers to build and program robots that can see and hear. We are so proud of these Kindergarten scientists!!!!

The Science of Sound - Music & Science

Continuing our study of the 5 Senses, we focused on the science of sound. We did sound experiments in the science lab and then connected with Mr. Savar in music class to continue our study with instruments. We learned about vibration, pitch, and sound waves.

Tasting Popcorn

On the way into the science classroom today when the students saw popcorn on tables... they were so excited that today is the day that we are exploring our sense of taste! The girls used their sense of taste to decide the difference between two flavors of popcorn. The girls said that they loved having tasting day in science! I'm so glad that the girls enjoyed the class and learned a lot too! Please ask your daughters to tell you what the bumps are called that you can see on your tongue. You just might learn something new too! :)

(The answer is ... Papillae - tastebuds are too small to see and are located around the interior grooves between the papillae.)

Names in Braille

For the sense of touch, one of the activities we did was write our names in Braille. We learned how to form the letters of the alphabet and used popcorn kernels as the raised dots. We then took a "field trip" around AIS lower school to feel the Braille on the classroom signs outside of every door.

Safety Smell - 5 Senses

We practiced safety by wearing goggles and learning how to do a safety smell. We experimented to find out if we could use our sense of smell to determine the difference between two clear liquids (Water and Vinegar). The goggles protected our eyes and we learned to use the wafting motion for a safe way to smell liquids we are unsure of.

Painting with Jello

To learn about our sense of smell, the girls drew a picture of something they like to smell and then we "painted" with Jello to make a "smelly picture." Although the room smells very sweet...it is also very sticky. Thank you to my helpers who helped with clean up! :)

Color Experiments

Today the girls worked on using scientific observation skills as they completed color experiments. They practiced looking closely, examining carefully for details, asking questions, and using their 5 senses (not taste today). Bonus: Hear what the kindergarteners think about science!
