*FYI - THIS WEB PAGE IS BEST VIEWED FROM A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP - WHEN VIEWING FROM A MOBILE DEVICE SOME IMAGES MAY APPEAR TO BE CUT OFF.

Some formats that I use to create these videos give me control over the music volume when students are talking and some do not. I apologize if some students are harder to hear.

End of Year Science Video

Although I am very sad to see the year come to a close, we had an amazing year of science filled with investigation and exploration. Thanks for a great year in science together! XOXO -Ms. Haines

Finding New Friends

We found a lot of new friends in the creek today. We saw FROGS, TADPOLES, WATER SPIDERS, and MORE! We only have one more day to visit the creek this year. We have learned a lot and had a great time exploring!

Science and Art S.T.E.A.M. Project: GREENHOUSES

This interdisciplinary project combined science and art classes while the girls designed and created their own greenhouses out of recycled cereal boxes. They learned about the importance of light in a greenhouse before they created their own design. After cutting windows and doors to let in light and painting the greenhouses, they were laminated to keep them sturdy and protect them from moisture. A Zip-Loc bag was attached inside for a secure place for the plants to grow. Then we planted the seeds. (Not my best pictures... many turned out too blurry...it happens sometimes - but from this video you can get the idea of this fun project.)

April 26th Visit to Kirk's Run

Today we visited the creek and had a wonderful time exploring and observing. We learned how to look carefully under rocks for living creatures and had a great time!

Dissecting Seeds

Students learned about the parts of a seed by dissecting lima beans. They removed the seed coat and then looked inside the seed to observe the food source and the start of the roots and leaves. There are 2 videos; one is from Ms. Curran's class and the other video is from Mrs. Hobson's class.

A Snowy Visit to Kirk's Run

When we went down to the creek today we were surprised to see that a big pile of snow was plowed over our supply bin and there was too much snow on the steps to walk down into the part of the creek that we usually visit. We were resilient and we problem solved and we visited the other part of the creek. We had a great time, as usual, exploring and observing using our senses!

CARS - Wheels and Axles

To demonstrate how wheels and axles work we made cars. The girls used hammers and a wheel and axle to put the cars together and then decorated them. If there was extra time, the girls got to race their cars down the friction ramps.

Our First Visit to Kirk's Run

It was a very cold day today but that didn't damper the excitement of our first visit to Kirk's Run. We went inside to write in our journals instead of staying outside longer. We can't wait for more days to explore together!

A Sneak Peek at Kirk's Run

Today we got our Agnes Irwin boots!!!! We also got our journals to write about our creek experiences. Then we went down for a sneak peek at Kirk's Run. Ms. Mahoney came with us along with our virtual learners so they could get a sneak peek as well. Next Friday will be our first day to explore in the creek. We can't wait!!! Stay tuned for more fun and exploration!

AND NOW THE WEATHER... 2nd Grade Weather Reporters: In front of the green screen

Second grade scientists have been learning about the science of weather. As a culminating project the girls became weather reporters. The reports include many of the components of our lessons from the entire unit. In each of their reports you will hear about types of clouds they learned about, seasonal information, appropriate clothing related to the weather, the use of weather instruments, and other important information related to weather. Students wrote their own reports, chose their own locations and selected their background images. Some of the girls did the green screen recording at home with a makeshift green screen sent home from school and other girls did the recording at school with their masks on. All of the background images were compiled at school.

A special thank you to the family members who helped to record at home as well as Mrs. Walker for all your help!

Rain Gauge

The girls each made a working rain gauge in class to measure the amount of rainfall in a given period of time. They are taking this tool home to measure the rainfall over the next couple weeks.

The second video is a tutorial about how we made the rain gauge in class and how to use it at home. This is the first tool for your at home Weather Station.

Harvesting Seeds in the AIS Greenhouse

Today learned how to harvest seeds from tomatoes. We will let them dry and keep them packaged away for safe keeping until the Spring when we will plant our own seeds - the very same seeds that we harvested today and grow our own seedlings. How exciting!
