Lower School Science

with MS. HAINES

Throughout the school year students will be doing inquiry-based activities, investigations and experiments in order to increase their understanding of science instruction. Interpreting, analyzing, and interacting with science is a critical aspect in the classroom and can be seen throughout this website.

Please see the tabs on the left for different pages on this site for more information about...

I want this class to be a safe space for everyone, a place where you’ll feel comfortable being yourself and taking risks, both academic and personal. Please be mindful of this and be respectful of your classmates when they have a question or speak from their own experience, and please speak with me or another trusted adult at AIS if you ever feel we’re falling short of this goal. Similarly, please let me know as soon as possible if there are any barriers to your study of Science outside of the classroom (such as not having reliable internet access at home, needing supplies for a project, etc.).

Earth Day 2022

Students who visited the science lab on Earth Day (April 22nd) shared their reflections on what they could do to help the Earth in celebrations of Earth Day 2022.  Do you have any thoughts on what you can do to protect our planet? Bonus video: some students who finished their Earth Day crown posed for a picture.

2022 AIS Women in S.T.E.A.M Showcase

The purpose of this event (during Women's History Month) is to highlight for our students how adults use science, technology, engineering, art, and math in their everyday lives. For this year's event, guest speakers were in person and presented an inside look into their work in a S.T.E.A.M. field that highlights how that person starts their day, what they do at work, and how they end each day. Guest speakers are current parents or family members of AIS students. We are so appreciative that they shared their passions with us.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED!

Bonus:  Calling All Scientists! (2019)

During the month of March, I invited parents (who work in the science field) to come in to our Lower School science classes as guest speakers. The focus is for the girls to see how adults use science in their everyday lives. Mothers, fathers, and other family members were all invited to schedule a time to come in, but since March is Women’s History Month, we had a special focus on WOMEN in the science field (either presently or in the past). In this video, please see a sample of all the visitors from the month.  What an amazing experience for the girls!  We have a wonderful community!  THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VISITORS FOR SHARING YOUR PASSION WITH US!
