About The Teacher:

Ms. Haines

Ms. Julie Haines

I am thrilled to be teaching Science at the Agnes Irwin Lower School. This will be my 12th year at AIS, having taught 4th grade for six years and also science to the 2nd graders for four years and this will be my sixth year teaching  Lower School Science in grades K-4.   I am excited to share new learning experiences with the amazing AIS scientists in this role. This year I am also honored to be the interim Lower School Dean.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from the George Washington University, a Masters of Education Degree in Science Education, as well as more than twenty years experience as an elementary school teacher.  I taught "Science in the Summer" for SmithKline Beecham and previously chaired the Science department in an elementary school.

I was instrumental in starting the first AIS Lower School STEM Robotics program and this year I will be co-teaching the 3rd grade robotics team.

I am the extremely proud mother of two terrific boys who also love to learn and explore!

One of the ways I like to communicate with families about the girls' experiences in science is by taking photos and creating movies which portray the joy, resiliency, leadership, determination, and excitement in the process of learning.  Please feel free to use these videos as conversation starters with your daughters and as an opportunity for the girls to revisit what they learned.  Grade level videos may be found on a tab on this website.  I am excited about the 2023- 2024 school year and the opportunity to experience science with all of my students!

I am proud to share my work as a Fellow of the National Coalition of Girls' Schools (NCGS) Global Action Research Collaborative on Girls' Education.  I was selected as only one of two representatives from the United States in a cohort of 9 international teacher researchers.  My research project about differentiated assessment is titled...

Show What You Know:  How Girls' Academic Confidence Increases with Multiple and Differentiated Ways of Sharing What They Learned

I love to explore Kirk's Run with the students on the Agnes Irwin campus.
