First Grade Videos

Dr. Hill with the first grade scientist!

I hope you enjoy these videos from our school year.

*FYI - THIS WEB PAGE IS BEST VIEWED FROM A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP - WHEN VIEWING FROM A MOBILE DEVICE SOME IMAGES MAY APPEAR TO BE CUT OFF.

Some formats that I use to create these videos give me control over the music volume when students are talking and some do not. I apologize if some students are harder to hear.

End of Year Science Video

Although I am very sad to see the year come to a close, we had an amazing year of science filled with investigation and exploration. Thanks for a great year in science together! XOXO -Ms. Haines

Terrific Turtles!!!!!

Mariah from Riverbend came to Agnes Irwin to do a presentation on turtles. We learned about the turtle life cycle and animal adaptations. The girls got to look at and touch real turtle shells and also got to observe and touch a real turtle named Bubbles. She is so clever and strong, she even opened the lid to her container and climbed out. We all had a great time. (FYI... the music on this video is from the group "The Turtles.") :)

Fist Grade Coding with Bee-Bot and Life Cycles

Today while the girls were learning about the life cycles, they were able to do some coding with our friend, Bee-Bot. As are most things we are still learning about, we didn't always get it right the first time... and then we can practice resilience. These girls did an amazing job and had fun too!

Calling All Scientists!

During the month of March, I invited parents (who work in the science field) to come in to our Lower School science classes as guest speakers. The focus is for the girls to see how adults use science in their everyday lives. Mothers, fathers, and other family members were all invited to schedule a time to come in, but since March is Women’s History Month, we had a special focus on WOMEN in the science field (either presently or in the past). In this video, please see a sample of all the visitors from the month. What an amazing experience for the girls! We have a wonderful community! THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR VISITORS FOR SHARING YOUR PASSION WITH US!

First Grade Science Reflections

Well, I have to say my heart is full today! Ms. Shield's class came to science with their own "published" books in hand. The assignment was to write about a "Small Moment" and they used our science videos to spark their memories. I couldn't love their stories more! Mrs. Bari's class also shared their reflections of 1st grade science so far this year. I'm so glad that they are all enjoying science class and learning so much this year!!!

Calling All Scientists! - Dr. Amirault

In this video, Dr. Amirault (Eloise's mom) talked to the girls about being a Pediatrician.

Calling All Scientists! - Dr. Ho

In this video, Dr. Ho (Emma's aunt) talked to the girls about being an Oncologist.

Animal Adaptation - The Camel

The girls are learning about animal adaptations. Today they experimented with different types of adaptations that camels have in order to live in the desert. Great job listening, learning, experimenting, and reflecting.

Dental Health

This unit is taught in connection with Mrs. McInnis and Mrs. Suplick, the P.E. teachers in Wellness. The girls are learning about the importance of dental health.

In the first video, the girls experimented with eggs because the shell is also made from calcium (a similar component of our teeth). We put the eggs in a cup of soda to see how it will stain the egg shell and demonstrate the importance of brushing our teeth. We also put chalk in soda to see how it not only discolors the chalk but softens it as well.

In the second video, the girls watched a video and had a demonstration about the best practice to brush their teeth and then each student was given their own toothbrush to practice in school. They took their new toothbrush home with them to continue using what they learned at school. The girls also used disclosing tablets which are chewable tablets used to make dental plaque visible. The tablets temporarily stain the plaque a bright color so the students can see where they have missed spots while brushing. They were surprised when they saw what they missed when brushing in the mirror. They have another tablet to try this again at home. (I tried to get pictures of everyone but I also need to assist students with the activity... I apologize if some students were not pictured.)

Excavation

As we continue to learn about soil, we discovered that fossils can be found in soil. We learned about archaeology and what tools are used by archaeologist. The girls were each given a "dinosaur egg" to excavate. They each have a pick to dig deeper and a brush to uncover the fossil more carefully. We used goggles to protect our eyes and our lab coats to protect our uniforms. My favorite quote, "I definitely want to do THIS when I grow up!" (There are 2 videos in this section from day one and day two.)

Layers of Soil

First graders are learning about soil. Today we focused on the different layers of soil. The girls used different colors of play-dough to represent the different layers in soil. They color coded their chart to match the colors in their section of soil. Great job girls!

Turning Milk into Butter!

As part of our unit on animals the girls are learning about how people use animals. One of the ways we use animals is for food. We discussed how we get milk from a cow and then the girls were asked a question: What will happen to milk (cream) if you shake it very hard? They graphed their hypotheses and then we conducted our experiment. At the conclusion of the experiment we got to eat our creation...delicious butter on a cracker! I hope you enjoy the video.

Opposable Thumbs

After learning about opposable thumbs, the girls did an activity to see what it would feel like to NOT have opposable thumbs. They wore gloves that had a knot in the thumb and did several activities such as writing their name, zipping a tunic, drawing a picture, and more!

Fish Prints - Science & Art

Continuing with our study of animal body coverings, we looked at and felt real fish scales. The girls learned about the print making process including ghost prints. They used a combination of real fish and rubber molded fish to make their own fish prints in this science and art combined class. Our favorite quote of the day, "It smells like sushi in here."

International Day of the Girl

Today is the International Day of the Girl. Please watch this video to hear the first grade girls' reflections of what it means to them to be a girl at the Agnes Irwin School. <3

Worms!

Today we worked with worms!!!! The girls were amazingly gentle and brave! We watched how worms moved, we observed to determine which side is their head, we tried to see if they liked wet or dry spaces and light or dark spaces. No worms were harmed in the making of this video!

Bird Feeders

To continue our unit on animals we are exploring how animals eat. Today we made bird feeders and brought them outside to share with the birds (and squirrels) that also call Agnes Irwin "home." While we were outside the girls were excited to see the birds overhead waiting for us to leave to enjoy the snack we left for them.

Exploring Animal Body Coverings

Animals have different types of body coverings. We read a book together and then had a chance to look at and touch different types of real animal body coverings. We saw shells, scales, feathers, and fur. What a great day to explore!

The Hunt for Camouflaged Butterflies

After learning about how some animals can camouflage to blend in with their environment, first graders selected a location in our room (the environment) that their butterfly would be placed. The girls colored their butterflies to blend in with that particular surrounding. On a separate day, the girls went on a hunt for butterflies (with binoculars). Some butterflies were very tricky!

Color & Milk Experiment

Question: What will happen when you put a drop of soap into a container with milk and food coloring? Watch and find out!!! We followed the scientific method starting with a question, then charting our hypotheses, doing the experiment, discussing our observations, and taking note of the conclusion.

Bonus: Hear what the 1st graders think about science!
