Maths

Curriculum Intent

At New Forest Academy, we are passionate that every child can enjoy and be successful at Maths.  A confidence in using numbers is critical to students’ future success in the workplace and in their personal lives.  We believe that the beauty of maths is contained in the network of interrelated ideas and the notion that there can often be a range of ways to solve the same problem - students become aware of the existence of an ‘elegant’ solution.  Solving difficult maths problems also teaches students to be resilient and to persevere.

Our mastery curriculum builds an understanding of maths skills that enables students to develop their own mathematical schema (network of ideas and concepts) - a deep understanding of maths skills.  The consistent use of the same language and mathematical representations across classes and years supports students’ understanding and memory of the knowledge, skills and concepts they need to learn and remember.  Students with a strong representational view of maths are more able to flexibly apply their understanding of concepts to solve problems in a variety of contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar.
