Curriculum Intent
“One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.”
~ Frank Smith
The MFL Department at New Forest Academy strives to foster a lifelong love of language learning for every student. Our engaging, ambitious and culturally enriching curriculum plan is delivered by a passionate team of highly qualified teachers whose aim is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to develop as confident, open-minded and versatile communicators. Alongside this we strive to encourage students to be curious, brave and to develop their skills as problem solvers.
Lessons are adapted to meet the demands of changes to the curriculum and there is explicit teaching of the knowledge and skills that students require. Teachers ensure that planning is linked to phonics, vocabulary and grammar which are the three key pillars of learning in MFL. The curriculum is structured in order to build on prior learning at each key stage and is sequenced to ensure that key topics are revisited. The use of spaced learning ensures that key knowledge, especially high frequency words are regularly identified and retrieved. As well as traditional methods of study students will have access to authentic materials such as music, film and literature to enhance their cultural awareness. This approach enables all students to deepen their knowledge and understanding and become resilient and competent linguists who leave school equipped with the transferable skills needed to pursue their chosen path.
