Curriculum Intent

“Every child is an artist. The problem is to remain an artist once they grow up.” ~ Pablo Picasso

In Art craft and design the students get to work with their hands to create artworks in a wide  range of different materials and media including drawing, painting, clay  and textiles. Students will be shown how to use new techniques and improve existing skills in order to become a better artist/ craftsperson.

Students will look at artists and craftspeople throughout history and the modern day to enable them to better understand Art in context. Art is often used to expose social/ political issues, record events or perhaps just provoke an emotion. Through this process we hope to encourage students to express themselves through their own work.

We are passionate about our subject and we want the students to love art and design as much as we do. For this reason we try to keep the projects diverse and interesting so that all students have a chance to discover an element of art that they enjoy. Even if students don’t go on to study art and design at GCSE level, our hope is that they will discover something that perhaps could become a relaxing and enjoyable hobby and even a source of therapy throughout their lives.

“Creating artwork allows your mind to be in a safe place while it contemplates the tougher issues you are dealing with. One can use the tools of brush, paint, pastels, crayons etc to expose and even for a short time color those issues in a different light.” ~ George E. Miller
