SEND Provision - Butterflies

We believe that every teacher is a teacher of every child, including those with SEND.  We are highly dedicated in providing inclusion in every area of learning for all children.  Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) support is provision that is additional to, or different from, that generally made for others of the same age.  This means provision goes beyond the differentiated approaches and learning arrangements routinely provided, as part of high quality, personalised teaching.  It may take the form of additional support from within the Academy, or require the involvement of specialist staff or support services.

Butterflies Class

As part of our school community we are proud to run a Specialist Provision for Communication and Language where children are placed with us by the Local Authority. This provision is called Butterflies.

Butterflies Class is a provision within our mainstream school for children with social communication needs. We have 6 places for Foundation Stage, Year 1 and Year 2 children. The places are allocated by the Local Authority to children with an EHCP who meet the criteria. Although based in the provision, the children from Butterflies can, where appropriate, access the mainstream classrooms and playground for times when they can be successful and have timetabled sessions in the hall for PE, library and music room like any other class. We are allocated one half day a week of NHS speech and language therapist time who works alongside our school staff. Our current cohort are all PECs or Makaton users at differing stages.

Butterflies has its own outside area and sensory room. The environment is set up for learning through play and exploration with opportunities for intensive interaction much as a Foundation Stage classroom is. Focused 1:1 times are scheduled every day for every child. The content of each session depends on the child’s personal outcomes. The majority of our children follow the Bridging the Gap then Foundation Stage Development Matters curriculum. Planning is very much focused on developmental stage rather than age and around their personal EHCP outcomes.

We work closely with families, the local community, and a range of agencies including our network of schools.

We aim for all of our children to flourish at Charles Warren Academy, to be part of a community where they are supported, valued and nurtured to be proud individuals.

We want all of the children to:

● Be proud of who they are and their achievements.

● Gain the skills, knowledge and confidence to achieve excellence.

● Develop a love of learning and understand the importance of resilience.
