AET vision for science
It is our duty to inspire young people to see the true beauty of science in the wider world by bringing it alive and therefore making it exciting, relevant and easy.
Brockworth Primary Academy - Science
““A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science” DFE 2013
Intent
Science at Brockworth Primary Academy aims to give all children a strong understanding of the world around them whilst acquiring specific skills and knowledge to help them to think scientifically, to gain an understanding of scientific processes and also an understanding of the uses and implications of Science today, in Brockworth and for the future.
For SEND learners this means
pre-teaching subject vocabulary to decrease the vocabulary gap
wider experiential learning through extra visits means enhanced opportunities to record from experience
adaptive teaching to meet the needs of all children.
Implementation
Working Scientifically skills are taught weekly for 90 minutes during Science lessons.
The content of the lessons are driven by the national curriculum.
The school has commissioned the ARK Curriculum+ for to support teachers and children with learning in Science. Within this curriculum, working scientifically skills, key knowledge and unit content is mapped out progressively across each year group.
ARK resources support teacher’s continuing CPD needs and ensure they become experts within the unit areas they teach.
Vocabulary is progressively shared and taught to the children within each unit.
Children are encouraged to formulate their own questions and lines of enquiry
Each classroom has a science working wall, which displays the key vocabulary needed and demonstrate the learning journey within each unit.
Our Science Curriculum is high quality, well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum, they are deemed to be making good or better progress. In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes (Key Objective Sheets linked to National Curriculum objectives);
Tracking of knowledge in pre and post learning quizzes;
Pupil / Teacher discussions about their learning
