Computing

Computing

“A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use computational thinking and creativity to understand and change the world” National Curriculum 2014.

Intent

At Brockworth Primary Academy, Computing inspires a love of learning through the discrete teaching of lessons using a wide range of technology. With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we believe that all children should have the opportunity to become digitally literate. We encourage children to be independent and resilient when using new technologies. Pupils have the right to one chromebook (KS2) each or an ipad between two (KS1) during computing to allow unique products to be created and allows individuals to demonstrate their creativity through their learning. When teamwork takes place, children are encouraged to work together and show compassion for others in their groups. The children are introduced to a wide range of technology daily such as; iPads, interactive whiteboards and chromebooks. This allows them to continually practise their skills and improve them, ready for their future workplace or to be active members in a digital world.

For SEND learners this means:

  • pre-teaching subject vocabulary to decrease the vocabulary gap and to give oracy for a purpose.

  • Adapted teaching materials where required to enable pupils to access the full curriculum.

E-safety

Alongside our computing curriculum, we are constantly teaching children the importance of online safety through the Kapow computing scheme. At the start of every new term, every class participates in a lesson on e-safety and children understand how to stay safe online. This is referred to weekly during computing lessons.

Implementation

  • Computing skills are taught and built upon in explicit lessons for 1 hour weekly.

  • The content of the lessons follow the Kapow Computing schemes of work and the national curriculum.

  • Each KS2 child has access to their own individual chromebook

  • Each KS1 child has access to 1:2 ipads

  • Each class is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, which the children are encouraged to use.
