At Brockworth Primary Academy, we believe that every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential. We provide the children with rich language, experiences, skills and opportunities for them to succeed in their often complex lives. We are a devoted and committed team and we offer a safe, nurturing environment for our children and their families, supporting them to face challenges with bravery and resilience and giving them a real sense of belonging. We provide our children with a broad and creative curriculum, fostering every child’s unique strength, helping them to navigate their learning independently. We are centered around the whole child, acknowledging each child’s journey and life experiences and providing them with the tools to love and thrive in their learning.
“The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, reason mathematically and can solve problems.” DFE 2013
Intent
Maths lessons are accessible to all pupils and the maths is made relevant and easy through clear representations, ensuring pupils have a conceptual understanding of the maths. We want all pupils to love their learning and have a ‘can do’ attitude towards maths. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered further extension and rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content. Topics can be interrelated to encourage pupils to make connections between ideas. The AET maths sequencing of the National Curriculum builds on previous knowledge and skills acquired in the previous year and provides children with opportunities to practise and further develop these skills and deepen their understanding. Throughout all of the stages of the flow, children are encouraged to be independent learners who take risks and are resilient.
For SEND learners this means:
Pre-teaching, for example, it may be suitable to pre teach subject vocabulary to decrease the vocabulary gap, or to consolidate prior learning.
SEND learners may need additional time and scaffolding on the Representation stage to support their understanding and independence.
Implementation
Teachers teach a minimum of 5 maths lessons a week.
The content of the lessons are driven by the Maths ARK curriculum
Maths lessons provide the opportunity for pupils to use practical resources and pictorial representations to represent a concept or practise a newly taught skill.
Pupils are given the opportunity to develop reasoning skills in every lesson.
Pupils have the opportunity to solve rich and complex problems and apply their skills in unfamiliar contexts.
Pupils have opportunities to become fluent in times tables, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division calculations in morning fluency time. This time is also used for pupils to revise other content which has been previously taught.
