You should apply to both universities and scholarships. Scholarship providers often ask for information on your university applications in the scholarship application.
Getting a scholarship depends largely on the suitability of the applicant and the scholarship offered. There are cases of students with ‘perfect’ score did not get a scholarship, and vice versa.
Specific HL subject requirements are typically not stipulated by scholarship providers. However, they might take an interest if studying that HL subject offers the experiences and knowledge that they prize.
Yes. Scholarships for foreigners are mainly offered by local universities. I chose to study medicine in CUHK because I'm from Hong Kong and I wanted to work here in the future. I received offers for medicine from both HKU and CUHK, but I ultimately chose CUHK because their curriculum seemed more suitable for me. It offered more flexibility, and the schedule was less packed in the first year. This allowed me to spend more time on other interesting courses. I even pursued a minor in French alongside my medical studies.
Managing university applications while preparing for exams was definitely stressful. I was applying to multiple universities while taking my IB exams. However, knowing how far I had come in my academic journey motivated me to keep pushing forward. To be sure, I prepared my personal statement well in advance to streamline the application process.
SG: NUS biomedicine + business double major, NTU biomedicine, SMU Law (Principal’s recommendation)
UK: Imperial College London (biochemistry, biomedical sciences), University College London (cancer biomedicine, biochemistry), University of Edinburgh (biomedical sciences)
HK: HKU medicine, CUHK medicine
For HKU Medicine, I had two interviews. The first one was a general interview held in Malaysia. We had to read an article, analyse it, and then engage in a group discussion for 15 minutes. The second interview, specific to medicine (MMI), consisted of 6 stations lasting 6 minutes each. Five stations were conducted in English, while one station was in Cantonese. They asked questions related to medical knowledge, ethical issues, and communication skills.
For CUHK Medicine, I had one interview lasting 10 minutes, conducted entirely in English. The questions covered a range of topics, including self-introduction, common health issues, and ethical dilemmas.
I ultimately chose to study in Hong Kong because I wanted to come back here for work, as my family is based here.
For students looking to apply for scholarships, most of the providers really do look at the final IB scores, and also the extracurricular activities you are involved in. It would be better to start planning early which scholarships you want to secure and work towards your goal by meeting their requirements. And don’t forget to submit all the necessary documents on time.
