The usual academic year runs from September to April or May but some universities operate a trimester system under which students can start their studies, in some or all programmes, at certain other times - e.g. January or May - as well as in September.
Application procedures vary. Some provinces have central application services to make applying more efficient (e.g. Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) (www.ouac.on.ca),
Each university has its own admission requirements and will assess students on an individual basis. Since entry to some programmes is limited, satisfying a university's entrance requirements does not guarantee admission. Different universities have different admission requirements and procedures, deadlines are generally from mid-December to the end of February.
Students should check all necessary details from the universities’ websites.
Students need to pay about C$150 to C$200 for each university for the application fee.
Some universities require TOEFL/IELTS from Intl Students.
Students are required to write personal essays, and/or statement of purpose which play a very important role in the process of evaluating the application for both admission as well as financial aid because it gives the faculty assessing the applications the most significant impression of the students. Generally, most Essays are used for scholarship purposes.
Letter of recommendations are also required by some Canadian universities. These are also used to award scholarships.
Students are allowed to work while studying in Canada for 20 hours/week during school terms and full-time during holidays. Minimum pay ranges from $15.00 - $20.00 (Canadian Dollars) per hour.
Upon graduation, students can participate in The Post-Graduation Work Permit Programme where they can stay and gain valuable Canadian work experience up to a maximum of three years. During this time, students may also apply for Canadian Permanent Residence.
Tuition fee for international students varies depending upon the intended programme of study. Keep in mind that you must also budget for books, equipment, student activities, food, housing, travel, local transportation, health-care, clothing, laundry and entertainment. When estimating costs, ensure that you factor in any sudden fluctuations in exchange rates with your home currency.
Tuition fees range from CAD$27,000 (Canadian Dollars) to CAD$69,000 (Canadian Dollars) depending on your programme and choice of university. Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine course (lab work) cost more.
Living costs range from CAD$1500 - CAD$3350 (Canadian Dollars) per month depending on location and city.
UBC application deadline of January 15, 2025
Document submission deadline: March 15, 2025
Document submission:
Applicants may upload documents on their own directly through their UBC Applicant Service Centre account.
Please note that UBC is no longer using Parchment/Bridge U. We are able to evaluate applications and issue offers based on unofficial documents that are self-uploaded by applicants. Also, reference letters are not part of UBC’s admissions process so please do not submit them.
Important notes:
No action is required if documents have arrived but have yet to be processed.
During this time of year, we receive an extremely high volume of documents for processing. It can take a few weeks for the application status to be updated on the UBC Applicant Service Centre (ASC) account once documents have arrived. Applicants are advised to check their ASC account and emails regularly for status updates and notifications.
Most application outcomes will be released from February to April. Successful recipients of UBC entrance awards and scholarships are expected to be notified in April.
For applicants who will need to fulfill our English Language Admission Standard (ELAS), test scores or waiver requests will need to be sent to UBC directly by February 15, 2025.
