HOW CAN I HELP STUDENTS START THINKING ABOUT THEIR CAREERS/COURSES
Encourage them to explore their interests and strengths through extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and internships. Provide resources and tools for career exploration.
WHAT RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS TO RESEARCH UNIVERSITIES AND CAREERS?
Share links to reputable websites (incl this website!), online courses (e.g. coursera etc), webinars, and career assessment tools (complimentary tests found on Bridge U portal which our school subscribes to). Recommend books and guides on college applications and career planning (lots can be found in our school library).
HOW CAN I ASSIST STUDENTS IN CHOOSING THE RIGHT MAJOR?
Share your personal journeys that could help them understand the connection between their interests, strengths, and potential career paths. Remind them to arrange meetings with us counselors.
WHEN SHOULD I COMPLETE MY REFERENCE FOR MY STUDENT AND SEND IT TO HIGHER ED?
The relevant deadlines will be emailed to you in Term 3.
WHAT ARE THE CRITICAL DEADLINES FOR STUDENTS' UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS?
Dates and Deadlines can be found here. All students have access to this site and dates.
WHAT SHOULD I INCLUDE IN A RECOMMENDATION LETTER FOR A STUDENT?
Provide specific examples and anecdotal information of their contributions and characteristics.
Slides from our REFERENCE WRITING WORKSHOP held during Staff Conference has been uploaded to our ACS Intl shared drive for teachers to access.
I RECEIVED A LINK TO COMPLETE A REFERENCE FOR MY STUDENT'S HONG KONG UNIVERSITY APPLICATION. DO I GO AHEAD?
Higher Education and Careers Department will handle this for you. We collect 1-2 References per student and upload it on relevant reference portals on behalf of teachers. So don't worry about this.
However, NUS Medicine Reference Report requires referees to answer a series of specific questions and for that we would need you to complete it directly via the link you receive from NUS. If ever in doubt, do check in with us at Higher Education.
UCAS Reference is submitted by Higher Education & Careers. Do not submit any reference via links you receive from UCAS in your email inbox directly.
WHICH REFERENCES DO I SUBMIT ON MY OWN?
NUS MEDICINE - Via link received in email
LOCAL UNI SCHOLARSHIPS - Via link received in email
US UNI APPS - Via link received in email
SEPERATE TO REFERENCES I ALSO NEED TO WRITE TESTIMONIALS. HOW WILL I KNOW WHO ARE MY EARLY APPLICANTS THAT NEED THE TESTIMONIALS EARLIER?
Higher Ed and Careers Department will let you know. In July after prelims we will send out a google form to students to let us know where they are applying to and which teachers they would like to seek a reference from. Based on this, we will get in touch with you.
HOW CAN I IDENTIFY STUDENTS WHO MIGHT NEED EXTRA SUPPORT IN THE COLLEGE APPLICATION PROCESS?
Look for signs of stress or confusion about their future plans. Refer them to Higher Education & Careers Counsellors - Junita/Nicholas (CHK, GKS). We will be very glad to assist them.
If you feel like your class would benefit from a Higher Ed counsellor coming to talk to them or conduct a workshop let us know!
WHAT STRATEGIES CAN I USE TO MOTIVATE STUDENTS WHO ARE UNSURE ABOUT THEIR CAREER PATHS?
Encourage exploration and self-reflection. Share any past student stories with them. Sometimes, seeing how others have handled the path they are walking on tends to inspire as well.
WHAT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR TEACHERS TO IMPROVE OUR GUIDANCE SKILLS?
Feel free to join any university information session we host during the school year. It's usually held in our Library on Level 1 or Chapel.
Universities also host us on their campus for information sessions and if you were interested to join us when we attend, drop a note to Junita and we will be sure to invite you along.
