How might you create a uniform that tells the story of the team that wears it?
Every sports team needs a uniform. Some of them are recognizable around the world. Choose a sport and a team and create the perfect kit. Will you choose your favorite professional team or create a new kit for your school or club?
Design Criteria:
Target Audience: For this design you are creating for the players, but also for the general public. You need something that people want to buy to show support for their team.
Purpose: Create a kit that inspires fans and players.
Empathize
This is all about the research. For what club or team are you designing? Make sure you know plenty about them. Look at old kits for inspiration as well as the story of the club, its location, its fans, etc. A good uniform should tell a story. Can you find a resource that gives you the team’s official colors? Make sure you are documenting your research on your website. Embed videos, articles, images and make sure you include your sources.
Define
Come up with a POV statement that tells what problem you are going to address. You can use this statement as a starting point: How might you create a uniform that tells the story of the team that wears it? Make sure you adjust it to include a more specific target audience and goal.
Ideate
Spend some dedicated time brainstorming. Write down a list of ideas that would meet the needs you outline in your POV statement. Each one should be different, but still meet your POV statement. Come up with several quick, but quality sketches of designs that would meet the needs you outline in your POV statement. Each one should be different, but still meet your POV statement. This should include colors, logos, special designs, connections to community or history, etc.
Prototype
Now you get to start creating your uniforms. You need to create at least two prototypes. If you create a home & away version, then you need two of each. You may use an online uniform tool to create one prototype, but the other should be hand drawn.
Test
Find a way to get your design out to fans for testing. Maybe you post your ideas to social media or send it to a large group of friends. Collect feedback, and make improvements before wrapping up your project.
