How might you design a structure that blends with the landscape or creates a minimal impact on the earth?
Architecture is a part of our everyday lives. We live in it, work in it, look at it as we move around our cities. But not all architecture takes into account the world around us.
Design Criteria:
Target Audience: You can choose to design for your family or a friend. If you choose a friend, is it just for them or for their entire family?
Sustainable: Make sure that your construction uses energy-efficient methods and local materials as much as possible.
Location: Identify where your construction will be. Will you build something in Amman, somewhere else in Jordan or another location completely? Maybe your home country?
Possible digital tools include
Dream Plan (Mac or Windows download)
You also have the option of building a 3D model out of materials you have at home.
Empathize
Look through the Wakelet and embed a few resources from it to your site that you find interesting. Write captions for those that you include to explain why they are interesting to you, how you think they are examples of sustainable architecture or how they were helpful to your developing understanding.
You can plan to design a house, a hotel, a restaurant, whatever you please. Think about who your client will be. Who are you creating this structure for? Make sure you talk to them to get their thoughts and needs.
Find at least two more sites or resources on your own that help you understand what sustainable architecture is. Embed them in your site and provide descriptions of them. Why are they interesting? How are they helpful to you for this project?
Define
Come up with a POV statement that tells me what problem you are going to address, who it is for and where it will be.
Ex: My dog Chale needs an environmentally friendly dog house that will keep him protected from the weather and comfortable throughout the year on our roof in Amman. It should include a space for sleeping and eating.
Ideate
Spend some time brainstorming about what you might need to include in your design. Will it be multi story? What materials could you use? What features should be included? Will it be in the city or in the countryside? You may also come up with several quick, but quality sketches of designs that would meet the needs you outline in your POV statement. Each one should be different, but still meet your POV statement
