1 - Findings & Impacts

The meta description must be located - like the title - in the HTML header of the page. Its role is to describe the content of the page. If the tag is blank, if content is irrelevant, or if it is not close enough to the user's request, Google will display snippets of the page content, which will include one or more terms included in the search .

The description has no direct impact on rankings. However, its content has a potential impact on the click-through rate (it must stimulate the user to click) so it has an indirect impact on rankings (as Google's algorithm will take into account the links that are the most often selected/clicked).

2 - Recommendations

The description tag should be placed after the <title> tag and before the header end tag </ head> like this:

• Make sure that the description of your page is in line with the title but also the content of your page. If the search engines detect a discrepancy between these elements, they can rewrite the descriptions automatically. Make sure that the description of your page is:
  • a complement of the title of the page,
  • a summary of the textual content of the page.
• The size limit is counted in number of pixels, it will be different between mobile and desktop. To build your meta-descriptions with a preview, go through preview tools like http://snippetoptimizer.net/google-serp or http://www.mobileserps.com/
• In general, never exceed 150 characters (including spaces) to ensure that the description is fully displayed in the search result pages (without being cut).
• Make sure to use verb-based sentences to make the description meaningful and enjoyable to read, and to get the user to click to find out more about your site.
• Use call-to-action verbs ("Visit", "Discover", "Explore", etc.)

Mistakes to avoid:

• It is absolutely necessary to write a unique description by page. Using the same description on two or more pages could penalize the ranking of your pages, since the search engines will consider that you duplicate your pages, which is something Google strongly advised against.
• Be careful not to repeat the same keywords too closely. If a keyword is repeated, try to space the occurrences
