Project Description: Social studies in fifth grade is focused on the historical formation of The United States in the Ann Arbor Public Schools. Prior to the Age of Exploration, The Columbian Exchange, and the formation of the American Colonies, students have been exploring the cultures and traditions of Indigenous Americans and Africans. An important symbolic and economic motif of certain cultures has been expressions of adornment, and it is through this primary focus that conceptual knowledge was built. After some foundational geopolitical research, students investigated the art forms and functions of masks and wampum belts. They created their own expressions using papercraft and beadwork. Along with their research, fifth-grade anthropologists are excited to share their understandings of these cultures and traditions.
With great care and attention over many weeks, students have created different artifacts to teach our community more about various African and Indigenous American cultures. These portfolios have been taken home by students. If your child is in fifth grade at A2 STEAM, please invite them to share their portfolio with you and explain all of the learning that has occurred as a consequence of this project.
Project Description: Thanks to a Bosch Teacher Grant the 5th-grade students will be constructing a Walk Through Hoop House on STEAM school grounds. This year-long project is broken into three phases. The first phase occurred October through December of 2021 where the students researched the benefits of building a hoop house for Fall and Winter produce and flower production. The goal of phase 1 was to create a prototype of a hoop house covering existing garden boxes on A2 STEAM property. Phase 2 will begin in January of 2022 and will be labeled our Permitting Process. In this phase the students will evaluate our Hoop House Prototype design to determine if we have created desirable conditions for the growth of plants in Fall and Winter months. After our evaluation we will begin the process of designing a walkthrough Hoop House to be placed on school grounds. The design process will include creating material lists, budgeting. site surveying, and ordering. Phase 3 of the Hoop House project will take place in Spring of 2022. In this phase the students will construct a walk through hoop house compete with new garden beds and hanging poles for potted plants.
Project Description: Students have conducted research and discovered how the Salmon population in SE Michigan is critical to the success of the Michigan Fishery and the Great Lakes ecosystems. Students used this key content knowledge to design and conduct their own investigation into how to make Salmon more successful in Southeast Michigan. They summarized their findings with informational writing.
After much research of salmon biology and the Great Lakes waterways, students have taken great care to ensure that the tank at A2 STEAM is ready to provide the optimal conditions for salmon eggs to thrive. Now that the eggs have hatched, students will attend to the alevin throughout the school year in order to ensure that they transition through the life cycle and are able to be released as healthy smolt.
