I like shooting portraits and buildings because both tell a story about the subject matter. Portraits tell you something about who the person is and who they are not. With portraits, you can control how someone looks or immortalize how they are perceived. Focusing on details gives the portrait life.
When I shoot architecture, I like to focus on the interesting shape of the building itself and how the building works with its surroundings.
