Peace?
The year is 1919. The weary nations of Europe and the United States have gathered at the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles in an attempt to create a lasting peace.
1. Divide into groups of ___5-6_____.
2. Each group will choose a card that will assign that group a
country. USA, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Austria
3. Each nation will have a designated goal and role to play. This is
private information for that nation’s delegation. You are to
represent the goals and interests of your assigned nation.
4. Each delegation will have _______10_________ minutes
to plan a strategy to achieve their goals.
a. How can the goals be achieved?
b. Which other countries are potential allies/enemies?
c. What types of compromises can be offered?
5. Process:
a. I will choose a student to act as president of the Summit.
1. Chair the meeting
a. Recognize speakers
b. Keep members in order
c. Call for motions
1. Motion to put forth legislation
2. Motions to call a question to a vote
b. The summit will be called to order. Based on the goals
of your nation and the strategic plan to enact these goals,
each individual will participate in the meeting.
6. Rules of the Summit
a. Procedure for the introduction and passage of a proposal.
1. A proposal must be written.
2. The country introducing the proposal must be
recognized by the Summit Chair.
3. The country making the motion must:
a. Read the proposal in its entirety
b. The country may use the board to put the main
ideas of the proposal in bullet format (another member of the group may do this as the proposal is being read).
4. After the proposal is read, the Chair will open the
floor for discussion.
a. Delegates may be recognized to give comments about the proposal under consideration. After discussion and possible changes it will be time to vote.
b. After each nation votes, the Summit Chair will tally the votes and determine if the proposal passes. We will vote on each individual bullet within the proposals.
