Students in second grade will begin to learn about the Principles of Design: contrast, balance, movement, scale, unity and pattern. During this year, students will begin to take their understanding of the elements of art and incorporate them in new ways that help to emphasize the different Principles of Design. For example, students will utilize line and shape to begin to construct patterns that show movement or rhythm in their artwork. Or, students will build upon their knowledge of color to understand that when opposite color families, such as warm and cool colors, are used in conjunction, contrast can be created in their work. Students will continue to learn material care and safety with an increasing focus on student choice and independence.
