This educational experience enriched my personal and professional learning. I learned the importance of providing students with experiences that promote creativity and motivation. During my classes, I had the opportunity to assess and evaluate my students learning not just by providing quizzes or exams but also while they participated in different and playful activities such as: Kahoot games, socialized discussions, questions and answers. To evidence this competency the first evidence I include are pictures of a rubric used to evaluate my students on a special project and a student's work. This evaluation consisted of having the students choose a book from the classroom of the topic of their selection. After reading, they had to correctly identify the elements of a story and create a hanger book report. In regards to their presentation, they had the liberty to be as creative as they wanted to be with their project, that is why I show an image of an example of what a student handed in. Each student was given time to complete this project, however, some students were not able to complete the project in the stipulated time. To prevent this from happening in the future I would work more with positive reinforcement and motivation in the students.
For my second evidence I include a tabulation of a Kahoot done with my students. This Kahoot was focused on adjectives. Seeing the results of this tabulation helped me identify which students were comprehending the material and which were having doubts. After gathering the necessary information I realized that they needed further practice. Therefore, I prepared various classes to practice through whole group activities as well as showing the students different kinds of examples. Gathering such information allowed me to address and target my students difficulties with the subject. As a result of the practice given in class, when I gave the final evaluation most of the students showed that they comprehended the material.
Providing and analyzing the different assessment and evaluations given in class has helped me to consolidate my profile as an educator. The experience of working in a classroom helped me to improve and grow professionally. I was able to apply knowledge I acquired of the different types of assessments and evaluations taught from previous classes I took in the Faculty of Education. I was able to take this knowledge and apply it in the classroom. As a result of the different strategies used, it impacted each student significantly. During the practicum, I had the opportunity to connect with my students and provide experiences that allowed them to demonstrate their comprehension of the class in diverse ways. In addition, analyzing data from those evaluations motivated me to make the necessary adjustments to my classes in order for the students to have a better outcome. This is why doing different evaluation techniques and analyzing their results is something I look forward to do in the future more often.
By evaluating we collect the results of the learning that is taking place. With this, we can know if the established goals and objectives are being met, but also serve to improve the teacher's teaching and student learning. Among the evaluations are the diagnostic evaluations that assess the student's knowledge before starting a subject. The formative evaluation is done during the teaching process and the summative evaluation measures the result of the learning process and is done at the end of a unit. Incorporating different assessment methods gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
For the EING 4010: Pre-Practicum class I conducted a unit plan with a focus on the elements of a story. The purpose was to apply everything learned during the semester by going through the experience of designing a unit plan. The unit topic was chosen, then the standards, the desired outcomes were described, the methods of assessment and finally how that unit would be developed.
This evidence details what formative and summative assessment methods would be used in the unit plan. For formative assessment, an oral presentation, creation of a story, class participation, and worksheet completion were added. For summative assessment, a rubric, quiz, exam, and the use of a journal as a self-assessment were added. This plan includes different assessment methods because I believe it allows students to demonstrate their knowledge and apply their skills in different areas. It can also help me to monitor those areas where students need help so that I can reinforce them and have them meet the established objectives. This task was a bit laborious, as I had to look for every little detail and design it. I researched each standard, detailed the desired objectives, and established various methods of gathering information about student learning. However, I am glad I did it because prior to this work I had not gone through the experience of creating a unit plan and this is something I will definitely have to do in the future.
