One of the many things I liked and enjoyed about the school I got the chance to do my practicum was that we had the freedom to use and integrate technology very easily. The school had incredible resources such as Wi-Fi, each student had a computer and in my classroom I had a TV that I could connect to my laptop and present. Therefore, one of the many aspects I had the opportunity to practice during my practicum was finding out multiple ways to have technology serve as an instrument to the students learning. I include a Padlet used in class and for my second evidence is a PDF of a Jamboard titled "Cinquain Poems".
The Padlet platform was a resource I got the chance to use a lot because I was able to not only see how the students enjoyed sharing their answers but also they got the chance to be creative. I mostly used Padlet as a introductory activity, a pre-reading activity and sometimes (which is the case of the evidence attached) as a post-reading activity. The way I used it was first I shared the link in Google Classroom, the students then accessed the link and read the guided question. Their answers were based on the final chapter of a novel read in class and they had the chance to predict or create an alternative ending to the novel. After they uploaded their answers they could include pictures or animated videos related to the class. I learned from incorporating Padlet in the class discussions or introductions that is a good way to get the students to participate and also for them to practice writing. As for my second evidence, the Jamboard PDF of a "Cinquain Poem" was an assessment done in a virtual class. Due to COVID-19 my class had to be changed from face to face to virtual. Therefore, I had to adapt what I had planned originally and change it into an effective online assessment. After I presented examples and explained the structure and rules of the Cinquain Poem, the students accessed the Jamboard and independently created their own poem. From this experience I learned that technology is an excellent way to have students practice what they learned. Since the Jamboard was a shared document, I was able to assess students when they needed my help and also see which students were working and which students weren't.
I learned a lot from using technology and integrating it during teachings. I learned that I could use it to ensure my students participation and that it enhances their engagement with the classes. Students nowadays are more technological and if I can use this particular interest to my and their advantage I would definitely do so in the future. I would also use the same platforms as well as others I had the chance to discover and learn how to use them. In terms of possible obstacles I faced integrating technology in my teaching was that first, learning how to properly use them. Then, when I used Padlet in class, some students didn't have their computers charged. Other times their computers wouldn't connect to the internet and I had to help them one by one; having these kind of situations consumed time. Using the Jamboard during the virtual classes the hurdle faced was that students disconnected from the class because of their slow WI-FI. Situations such as the ones mentioned as well as the students accessibility to technology are paramount for me to take into consideration when wanting to use technology.
I am a better educator after these two activities as well as all of the opportunities of using technology in the classroom. I learned that using technology enables new ways of learning, communicating, motivating students and promote their participation. Students get very excited when you tell them that computers will be used in class and enthusiasm towards the class enhances their productivity and engagement.
Technology facilitates and streamlines most processes for personal and professional purposes. There are many benefits in using it especially for educational purposes. Integrating technology in education helps collaboration and motivation of students, is flexible, optimizes time and fosters communication between the teacher, students and also parents. It is well known that in the year 2020 we were hit by a pandemic that has affected us even today. In that year, for a short time, face-to-face education had to be paralyzed and the only viable option to continue everyone's studies was distance education. This allowed that, even without having face-to-face meetings, teachers could take the class and students could take them. This would not have been possible without technological advances and the various means of teaching. Having lived this experience shows that technology and education complement each other, helping to create new and enriching learning experiences.
In August to December 2020, I made a "Kahoot" game for the EING 4007: Materials Preparation Workshop class. This work was for the purpose of applying technology to a particular topic and creating an educational game. The "Kahoot" has as its theme "Captation: Capitalization and Punctuation" by means of this silver form a quiz was created to evaluate and practice the concept of capitalization and punctuation.
Through this evidence, students' skills are strengthened while class participation is encouraged. It aims to develop reading and comprehension skills in order to be able to answer correctly. Reviewing the concepts of capitalization and punctuation helps students with their writing. For this reason, it is adequate evidence because technology was used as an educational tool to reinforce students' knowledge in a fun way. Learning to create quizzes through the "Kahoot" platform benefits my development because it gives me a different alternative to help review the material and see in which area, they need reinforcement.
