This study examines the regional scale surveillance of antibiotic resistance within humans and chickens in northern coastal Ecuador. A total of 24 villages are included in the study, and represent different levels of remoteness. Each village is visited for approximately 2 weeks (15 days) in duration, and visited again every 8 months for a total of 5 years. This serial case-control study is being conducted for all cases of diarrhea and respective community controls are randomly selected, with a minimum of 10% of the population being selected as controls. Stool samples are collected for all cases and controls, and analyzed for resistance to 14 different antibiotics.
