The Resident Experience

My name is Max Levine. I chose the University of Alberta, Urology program for the excellent staff-resident relationships, the great operative experience for residents, and the resident camaraderie. With lots of opportunities for research, educational pursuits, and outstanding clinical training, it was a clear choice for me. UofA Urology has the level of collegiality and light-heartedness most graduating medical students want in a residency, but at the same maintains a level of professionalism and academic rigor that I find appealing.

The University of Alberta Urology program provides a truly ideal resident learning environment. I believe that the staff commitment to education and mentorship of the residents is unparalleled. Our resident cohort support and motivate each other to balance working hard with playing hard, all while maintaining a comprehensive exposure to the numerous subspecialties in the setting of one of the highest surgical volumes in Canada. One of the often-overlooked strengths of the program is the off service rotations in vascular & general surgery, intensive care unit, radiology and nephrology, all of which provide an invaluable foundation of knowledge while fostering critical professional relationships with specialties that we interact with on a day-to-day basis. The program is rigorous from an academic, research and service point of view, and that is truly the greatest strength that allows our graduating residents to obtain revered fellowships and staff positions. Edmonton itself has grown into a beautiful city, rich with food, music, sports, festivals and the arts, not to mention the proximity to the endless playground that is the Rocky Mountains. I love this city and I love this program; and I encourage anyone who is looking for an exciting and challenging Urology residency to strongly consider joining our crew.
