Academic Activities & Research

Cardiac Surgery

The University of Alberta Cardiac Surgery Residency Program has always been considered one of the top programs in Canada. There is a major commitment by the Department of Surgery toward research and research development but at the same time a major strength is direct exposure to all aspects of cardiovascular surgery. This includes pediatric surgery, heart failure and assist devices, aortic surgery, complex valve repair, MIS, and EP surgery. Residents in the past have been highly successful in obtaining Fellowship and staff surgeon positions once they have completed their training.
