General Surgery

The University of Alberta General Surgery Residency Program participates in competency-based medical education through the Competence by Design (CBD) program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Click on Competence by Design for more information.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide all-inclusive training in General Surgery. The first year provides a solid basis for further specialty training in surgery. Exposure to all aspects of General Surgery include Trauma, Pediatric Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Endoscopic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Transplant Surgery, Community Surgery and Research are included in the five year program.

Seminars

Three hours a week are devoted to seminars. A variety of topics pertaining to Surgery are covered. Protected time for seminars take place on Friday mornings. For those who are entering into a research stream there are also a series of seminars in Experimental Surgery available during the PGY-2 or PGY-3 level.
