Alberta Health Services (AHS) Alberta Health Services (AHS) - Edmonton Zone (EZ) provides complete health services to one million residents in the cities of Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Spruce Grove and St. Albert, the counties of Leduc, Parkland, Strathcona and Sturgeon (including communities within their geographical areas), as well as the town of Devon and communities in the eastern part of Yellowhead County. The EZ serves a total of 1.7 million people across central and northern Alberta, providing specialized services such as trauma and burn treatment, organ transplants and high-risk obstetrics. In addition to emergency and acute care, AHS – Edmonton also provides home care services, outreach programs focusing on rural areas and aboriginal health, telehealth, continuing care, public health, specialty clinics, mental health services and numerous rehabilitation and prevention programs.
The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada. The UAH offers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment services, including specialized services with cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, renal, critical care, emergency/trauma care, and a state-of-the-art burn unit. The hospital is also home to Alberta Health Services’ organ and tissue transplant program, which is recognized as a national leader in both success rates and transplant volumes. Providing support to the surgery and transplant programs is the Comprehensive Tissue Centre, one of the only two fully accredited multi-tissue banks in Canada. The UAH is one of two major trauma centres within Edmonton and receives about 60% of all major trauma cases originating from outside the region. The UAH training program for cardiac surgery is the largest in Canada and the cardiology training program is the second largest. The UAH is a major referral centre caring for patients from across Central, Northern and Western Alberta and the Northwest Territories
Membership in the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) became a requirement for each Resident effective September 1, 2003, per Article 21.01(a) of the PARA Agreement. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have up to date CMPA coverage. You must also notify CMPA when going to a different city on elective. The residency program does not reimburse expenses for this. PGME requires proof of coverage – if this has not been done, you will not be allowed to work.

Each province has a College which provides physicians, both resident and staff, with a license number. It is your responsibility to ensure that you possess an educational license to practice medicine in Alberta. Similarly, when going away on elective, you must apply for an educational license in that province.

Ensure you are using your ualberta account. All PGME and rotation information will ONLY be sent via ualberta. It is imperative that you check your email regularly and respond within a timely fashion.
Your ID badge/access card is obtained at the UAH Security Office (0H1.04 WMC, 780-407-8347). Paperwork to receive your ID badge/access card will be given to you from the PGME office.
Pagers will be distributed by the PGME office in 2-76 Zeidler Ledcor. Your pager is for use during your residency and must be returned prior to leaving the program. There is a $50 charge for lost or damaged pagers.
Replacement pagers can be obtained from the UAH Admitting Department, Monday to Friday: 0630-2000 hr, weekends/Stats: 0700-1515hr. After hours, please go to the Admitting Satellite office, located in the Emergency Department (WMC – 1A6.03). You will be asked to sign for the replacement pager. Replacement batteries can be obtained from one of the Nephrology secretaries or from the Nephrology MEPC.

NT log-in and password will allow you to access the AHS computers. All staff are required to complete Security Awareness training in order to keep their access both current and enabled. netCARE is Alberta Health Services’ electronic health record. Initiated in 2004, netCARE provides electronic access records pertaining to patient visits on the system (i.e. discharge summaries, OR reports, laboratory results, etc.). To access netCARE and eCLINICIAN, you will receive a log-on and password upon completion of the application forms. You should receive an email from medical affairs with regards to online training. Linen services is located at 0H4.02 WMC, 780-407-1882. Receive paperwork to receive a lab coat from Linda Semper.
You will be issued two lab coats at the beginning of the year. Soiled lab coats will be straight exchanged for clean ones throughout your rotation at Linen Services.
You will also require a University ONEcard which is your University ID, library card, debit card for printing/photocopying and allows you free access to certain points on the LRT line. The PGME office will send you a link to upload the photograph to your ONEcard account so that the staff can produce the card. This will be available for pick up at the PGME orientation if starting your residency on July 1.
OTTR is a database for all transplant programs at the University of Alberta. Linda Semper will seek access for for you.
NIS is a database for all Nephrology information, including letters, dietitian notes, referrals, etc. Paperwork for access will be sent on your behalf by Linda Semper.
Upon registration with PGME, each resident will be issued a university username which allows online and site access to all library resources.

All residents are eligible for reciprocal parking privileges (for all hospital sites in Capital Health) through the UAH parking office at a monthly rate by payroll deduction. Applications are made available at the Resident Orientation. Any parking required thereafter should be through the Parking Office.
This room is located at 5A1.06 WMC. Each resident has a specific access code for the door. The chief resident/transplant fellow room is located at 5C1.12 WMC. There is a resident touchdown space located at 11-132 CSB. Use the same code you use for 5A1.06 WMC.
Residents are expected to dictate reports and discharge summaries. Consult notes can also be dictated at certain AHS sites, but residents should check with the consult staff regarding their preference.

It is your responsibility to have a yearly Mantoux (if you are Mantoux negative). This is FREE of charge to all residents from Occupational health and Safety (1-198 CSB, 780-492-6968). Also please ensure that you have proper immunization to Hepatitis B. Supplementary disability insurance is taken out by many residents of their own initiative, in addition to that provided by PARA.
Call stipends are submitted to PARA by the rotation from which the service was provided. When you are scheduled for home-call and are required to come in for more than four hours, one hour being after midnight, your home-call stipend changes to in-house stipend status. Be sure to sign the appropriate PARA form for each date this occurs and notify the ID MEPC (Linda Semper) who submits the information to PARA.

The department of Diagnostic Imaging provides services for General Imaging, Specialty Imaging (Vascular Interventional Neuro Radiology/CT Scanning/Cardiac/MRI), Nuclear Medicine, Thoracic Imaging, Pediatric Radiology, Ultrasound, and Peripheral Vascular Lab. The Department maintains 24 hour services for patients. Diagnostic results are available on netCARE.
You can access radiology and diagnostic imaging exam results that are reported but not typed via telephone. The instruction sheets are available at the level 2 radiology department. If inside the hospital dial 9 then 780-407-2800:
