All residents will be provided with copies of the Goals and Objectives of the Nephrology Residency Training Program upon entry to the program. There are specific Goals & Objectives for each rotation. Residents should review these with the attending at the beginning of the rotations. All rotation mentors receive copies of rotation specific objectives at the beginning of a rotation.These Goals & Objectives include ones pertinent to the CanMEDS objectives. National rotation-specific ITERS have been developed which focus on objective-based evaluation of the resident.
You will meet with the program director every three months to review progress in the program.
In addition to the use of rotational ITERs, the following is a summary of evaluation methods that the Nephrology subspecialty resident will receive feedback during the 2-year training period:
(a) Medical Expert
Rotation-specific ITERS based upon rotation objectives in CanMEDS format
Once-yearly short-answer-style written exam modelled after the Royal College exam in Nephrology and linked to core curriculum topics in the preceding 6 months
All-day annual ASN online formative in-training exam
Procedure log
Diagnostic case mix log
10 consecutive DOPPs for central line insertion in the first year of training
Annual OSCE-style exam evaluating the various CanMEDS disciplines as pertaining to nephrology
(b) Communicator
Completion of a series of 12 mini-CEX observed counselling scenarios with the expectation that 4 mini-CEXs will be completed per 6 months of training
Evaluations of staff and peers of presentations at teaching rounds
Evaluation of consult letter writing skills in outpatient clinics (4 letters in first 6 months of training)
Bi-annual feedback from mentored clinic admin staff
(c) Collaborator
Completion of multisource feedback tool by 3 allied health professionals, selected by the trainee, annually
(d) Scholar
The trainee will participate in and receive feedback on a mentored research project during their two years of training
Feedback will also be received upon completion of critical appraisal sessions throughout the academic year
(e) Leader
The resident will receive evaluations on management skills in the running of outpatient clinics and hemodialysis satellite unit practice
In the second year of training, the resident will complete a renal program administrator project, highlighting the challenges of ESRD program development and maintenance
(f) Advocate
Evaluation of a 2-week quality improvement rotation with project proposal/ completion of the QIKAT during this rotation
Evaluation of resident presentations at morbidity and mortality rounds
(g) Professional
Completion of counselling mini-CEX scenarios as described above
A mini-PEX evaluation is completed by the rotation supervisor at the completion of each rotation
Multisource feedback tool completed by allied health
Attending Evaluations
The program utilizes the online evaluation system (One45). You are required to complete evaluations on attendings and rotations. These are anonymous, so you are encouraged to be as honest as you can. Nephrology staff will also use this system to evaluate you.
