As representatives of the University of Alberta, residents and fellows are expected to follow a standard of responsibility. These responsibilities include:
All residents are expected to review the Royal College objectives and the Program rotation-specific objectives
All residents are expected to take night and weekend call in accordance with PARA guidelines. You are expected to answer your pages promptly. The chief resident creates the call schedule which will be distributed no later than one week prior to each block to all residents
All residents are expected to review the University of Alberta policies
Provide empathetic , appropriate, and responsible patient care
Ensure that histories and physical examination of patients are completed and recorded within 24 hours of admission
Attend and participate in Kidney Matters, Journal Club, M&M Rounds, Core Lecture Sessions, and Nephrology Grand rounds
Request face-to-face mid-rotation
Must complete faculty and rotation evaluations on One45
Dress in a professional manner
Take advantage of educational opportunities
Respect the dignity of patients and their families
Respect patient confidentiality
Work harmoniously and respectfully with all members of the healthcare team
Take advantage of opportunities to be involved in clinical research studies, with a goal to publishing at least two papers while in training
Transfer the "Bond of Patient Trust" when changing services. Review each case with the receiving resident in the presence of the patient and compile comprehensive transfer notes which are problem-oriented
The lead resident will be in their second year of Nephrology training.The lead resident is to be selected by their peers and approved by the program director. Typically, the term is for one year, although may be split up between 1-3 residents. The position is remunerated via PARA or the Division of Nephrology.
Responsibilities include:
Functions as a lead liaison between residents and program director to provide feedback on clinical and educational activities and address any resident concerns
Coordinates and creates monthly call schedules, to be approved by Program Director and forwarded to PARA, Medical Education Program Coordinator and Assistant to NARP Director in a timely way
Assists in the coordination of Morbidity & Mortality Grand Medical Rounds (4 per year)
Schedules Journal Club
Responsible for set/take down of Core Lecture sessions
Responsible for reporting office equipment requirements, i.e. computers, fax machines, scanners, etc., to Program Director and/or Medical Education Program Coordinator
Assists in the coordination of resident and staff social events
Assists in the orientation of incoming residents
Attends Residency Training Program Committee meetings (every 2-4 months)
Participates in the interview and selection process for RIV residents (Sept-Oct) – reviewing and ranking applications
Creates Core Lecture schedule
Coordination of Subspecialty Residents (SSR) call throughout the year
Fosters sense of “esprit de corps” amongst residents
Crisis management/counselling for residents encountering difficulties
Aids in coordinating social events within the Division
Residency Program Committee - 4-5 x/year
Meeting with Program Director (Dr. Courtney) 4 times per year
The chief participates in the interview selection process for incoming SSRs - reviewing and ranking applicants. A standardized evaluation form is used to rank the candidatees based on a combination of attributes gleaned from the electronic applications and the interview
