These clinics are scheduled on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9 AM – 12 PM at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic, section 3D.
There are 4 patient slots for each clinic. 2 patients will be scheduled with the attending physician and 2 patients will be scheduled with a resident. Each patient is scheduled for 1 ½ hour (9 AM and 10:30 AM) to allow time for the resident to assess and review patients with the attending physician.
The electronic medical record (EMR) used at the Kaye Edmonton Clinic is Connect Care. Please ensure you have access to Connect Care before this rotation starts. To get access, please contact Carrie Hlady, GIM Program Coordinator at carrie.hlady@ualberta.ca.
Please ensure that the EMR on Connect Care is updated for all patients seen. Past Medical History, Medications, Allergies, Social history, vitals and orders can all be entered on Connect Care.
There are letter templates on Connect Care for which all users have access to. Ask your attending which template(s) they would like you to use for your letters.
Patients seen in UAC that require additional follow‐up appointments should be booked in follow‐up with the attending physician that is on. Occasionally, if a patient requires follow‐up but can be booked with the same resident to preserve continuity for a learner, that patient can be booked back in UAC for that purpose.
Referrals for GIM and UAC clinics are triaged by the attending physician on ward consults. If there is a senior resident or junior attending rotating through this service, they can participate in triaging.
These clinics are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons around 1 PM at the Preadmission Clinic, located in 2C3 WMC.
The patients seen in preadmission clinic are referred for pre‐operative consults requested by varying surgical specialties. The number of patients needing to be seen vary day to day. Please call the preadmission clinic at (780) 407‐7396 to find out how many patients will be requiring consultations that day. You can also find the patients on Connect Care under "EDM UAH WMC PAC".
Consultations are documented in Connect Care.
A major part of this rotation will be focused on pre‐operative consultation. There are GIM pre‐operative modules online which are very educational. Please go through this module on this rotation.
When the Critical care attending physician identifies a patient who may be ready for transfer to GIM ward, they will request consultation by GIM Consultation Service.
The Ward GIM Consultation Service assesses patient and patient’s readiness for GIM Ward.
If patient is assessed as appropriate for transfer to GIM ward, the GIM Consult Service will:
Complete a Consult Note - indicating the patient is appropriate for transfer.
Inform the Bed Coordinator via Connect Care secure chat or call (77718) to inform them the patient has been accepted.
Continue to follow along with Critical Care Service until such time as bed becomes available for transfer.
Once a bed is available on a GIM unit, give handover to the accepting physician or senior on the unit.
**Where possible, transfers should most often take place during regular working hours.
The Bed Coordinator should, in the first instance, always communicate with GIM Consultation service regarding Critical Care Transfers
