The Fayette Area Swim Team (FAST) was founded in 1991 as a member of the West Houston Aquatic League (WHAL). There were 57 swimmers on the FAST team ranging from 7 to 18 years of age the first year. The next year, there were 75 swimmers. For the next 8 years, FAST averaged 100 swimmers each summer and they came from as far away as the Hallettsville area. WHAL consisted of 12 teams, many of which were year 'round programs.
During these first 10 years, it became clear that there was a need for other towns in our area to start their own program. This would allow FAST swimmers to compete with other teams in the area that did not swim in a year 'round program while still competing with the Katy area teams. For the 11th season, the league decided to divide the league into divisions based on team size. FAST was unable to compete with the teams in its own backyard. It was after this season that the coaches of FAST, Columbus and Schulenburg worked to form SALT (Smallest Aquatic League in Texas) to provide a better experience for our summer only swim club swimmers.
The team now fluctuates in size each year, but has generally ranged in size from 115 - 140 swimmers. Our coaches focus on promoting interest in the sport and the development of fundamental skills in hopes of funneling skilled swimmers into the LaGrange High School year 'round swim program (although the program is not affiliated with the LaGrange ISD).
