Grammar Activities & Games

The grammar games listed below are fun ways to promote your child's grammar development.

Grammar Game Suggestions:

1. Memory / Concentration:

In order to play this game, you will need to print and cut out a duplicate set of picture cards for the grammar pattern you wish to target (listed below). All of the picture cards are spread out and placed face down on the table. Players take turns trying to find two picture cards that match. Turn 1 card over and name it (e.g., "she is driving"). Then, turn another card over and name it also (e.g., "he is running"). If the two cards match, then the player places them aside and takes another turn. If the two cards do not match, then the player turns them face down and the next player takes a turn. The object is to match all of the pairs. The player with the most pairs wins. Make sure your child uses correct grammar as s/he names the cards.

2. Hide 'n Seek:

To play this game, you will need to print and cut out a set of picture cards for the grammar pattern you wish to target. Hide the picture cards around the room. Your child can name each picture as s/he finds it, using correct grammar (e.g., "she is running").

3. Magic Card:

In order to play this game, you will need to print and cut out a duplicate set of the picture cards for the grammar pattern you wish to target (listed below). The picture cards are shuffled and spread face down on the table. The dealer selects one card as the “magic card” (e.g., "The magic card is: They are jumping"), shows it to the players, then places it to the side. The first player selects a card and names it. If it is not the card that matches the magic card, the card is left face up and another player attempts to turn over the mate to the magic card. The game concludes when a player finds the magic card. Make sure your child uses correct grammar as s/he names the cards.

4. Go Fish:

In order to play this game, you will need to print and cut out a duplicate set of the picture cards for the grammar pattern you wish to target (listed below). 5 picture cards are dealt to each player. The rest of the picture cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Each player sets aside any pairs s/he may have been dealt in their hand. The object of the game is to find the pair for each card in your hand. Each person takes a turn asking the other players for a card in their hand (e.g., Johnny, do you have "She is driving?"). If the other player has the card, they must give it to the person requesting it. If no one has the card, then the person requesting the card is told to "Go Fish" and must pick a card up from the draw pile. The game continues until 1 player finds pairs for all the cards in his/her hand.

5. BINGO (variation of BINGO):

In order to play this game, you will need to print the BINGO Game Boards and Picture Cards for the grammar pattern you wish to target (listed below). You will also need place markers such as BINGO chips or pennies. 2 or more players can play this game. Picture cards are placed face down in a draw pile. Each player receives a BINGO Game Board. Players can take turns being the "Bingo Caller," where they choose a picture card from the pile and call it out loud (e.g., "it is her car" / "she is driving"). Every player with that same picture on their game board places a marker (e.g., BINGO chip or penny) on that particular game board picture square. The first person who covers a whole row of pictures on their game board calls out "BINGO!" and wins the game.
