Mainstage Auditions

2024 Mainstage PLAY Auditions will take place on
Sunday, March 3rd 1-5pm & Monday, March 4th 7-9pm
or you may instead submit a video audition by March 2nd
(please upload your video audition on the audition form).

Please prepare one short monologue. You may also be asked to read a side from one of the plays before leaving the audition. Most directors will be holding callbacks (if necessary) within a week or two of auditions.

Run for your Wife - 2F, 5M, 1 either  Directed by Gavin Calgaro

John Smith - M late 20’s-50’s a London taxi driver who is secretly married to two women 

Mary Smith - F late 20’s-50’s one of John’s wives

Barbara Smith - F late 20’s-50’s another of John’s wives

Stanley - M late 20’s-50’s John & Mary’s upstairs neighbor. Single,unemployed, and reluctant but forced to be caught up in John’s stories and lies.

Detective Sergeant Troughton - M 30’s-60’s Police officer

Detective Sergeant Porterhouse - M 30’s-60’s Police officer
Bobby Franklyn - M any age, late 20’s+ John and Mary’s upstairs neighbor.  A frock-maker, married to Cyril.
Reporter - Any 

The Revolutionists - 4F  Directed by Jeff Boles

*While the script indicates specific ages, casting will be flexible and women of all ages are encouraged to audition.

OLYMPE De Gouges – 38 F badass activist playwright and feminist. Theatre nerd, excitable, passionate, a showman. Widowed and never married To ensure her personal freedom.
CHARLOTTE Corday – 25 F badass country girl and assassin.  Very serious, hardened by righteousness, Never been kissed. Has a pocket watch she keeps checking. Also plays FRATERNITE in a mask.

MARIE Antoinette – 38 F pretty badass but fascinating former queen of France. Bubbly, graceful, opinionated, Totally unaware, unintentionally rude, and oddly prescient. Never had a real friend. Also plays FRATERNITE in a mask.
MARIANNE Angelle – 30’s F A badass black woman in Paris. She is from the Caribbean, a free woman, A spy working with her husband, Vincent Tough, classy, vigilant, the sanest one of them all. 

A Rock Sails By - 2F, 1M, 2 non-gender specific  Directed by Melissa Grande
DR. CUMMINGS: Female, 50’s-60’s. An astrophysicist, professor. She is very intelligent,

somewhat sardonic, a believer in facts. She can be terse and dismissive. She was widowed two

years ago and is still in mourning. She has a daughter, OLIVE. Cummings receives a diagnosis

of early onset dementia but shows only slight signs of it during the play.

OLIVE: Female 20's-30's, Cummings’ daughter. Smart, self-possessed, caring. A positive,

smart, attractive person, she believes in more than she can see or, unlike her mother, is at least

open to the possibility. She is a doctoral candidate in English literature. Also a bit terse at times.

They clash over this and other things. Still, she loves her mother very much. She and Jason, are

a possible fit.

JASON: Male, 30’s. A journalist, he is “floating through life” somewhat. He works for a

magazine he doesn’t respect, has recently broken up with a girlfriend, and isn’t sure what he

believes about the greater questions. He does want there to be more than this. He wants there to be meaning and order. Ethical, intelligent, searching.

PLAYER: Any gender or non-binary. HALEY, a T.A. who works for Dr. Lynn, CHANCELLOR, the

head of the University, FARRELL, Jason’s superior at GRATE magazine, DOCTOR, the

specialist that Lynn sees and, optionally, the O.S. voice of TOM.
MESSENGER: Any gender or non-binary

Into the Breeches - 6 F, 2 M  Directed by Rob Hockenberry
Maggie Dalton: F - 50’s the talented if untested director, plays The Chorus.

Celeste Fielding: F - 50’s, Celeste is a diva, and plays Henry V and IV.

Ellsworth Snow: M - 60’s, the board president of the Oberon Play House and the husband of Winifred.

Winifred Snow: F - 50s, Winifred is untalented but enthusiastic socialite and wife of Ellsworth; she plays Falstaff.

Stuart Lasker: M- 40’s, Stuart is the only male in the group and is the stage manager; he also plays Mistress Quickly
Ida Green: – F - 30’s, Ida is the imaginative costume designer; she plays Hotspur.
June Bennett: F - 20’s, the ingenue and plays the Kates.
Grace Richards: F - 30’s, a newcomer to town; she plays Henry IV and V. 

Sleuth - 2M  Directed by Barbara LeFebvre

Andrew Wyke - 50’s-60’s An old-fashioned mystery writer with a penchant for riddles and disturbing games. Married to Marguerite
Milo Tindle - 30’s-40’s Marguerite Wyke’s lover, victim of Wyke’s games but equal to the task and up for revenge.

Select and prepare one of the provided solo options to perform for your audition (Lawrence, Freddy, Christine, Muriel, Jolene, or Andre).  Additionally, all should familiarize themselves with the remaining solo songs and 3 provided vocal sides, especially for characters that fit your voice type and for whom you are auditioning, as you might be asked to sing additional material.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels  Directed by Ponny Conomos-Jahn

Lawrence Jameson ‐ Male, 40s‐60s, Tenor. An experienced British con artist who is  sophisticated, suave, and elegant. Dialects: British RP, German. Vocal range: G2‐Bb4.  

Freddy Benson ‐ Male, 20s‐30s, Tenor. A young, clever, aspiring American con artist. He is a  sloppy, yet an attractive womanizer. Has a romance with Christine. Dialects: Various American,  Dimwit. Vocal range: A2‐B4  

Christine Colgate: Female, 20s‐40s, Mezzo‐Soprano. A seemingly good‐natured American  heiress, vacationing on the French Riviera, with a huge secret. Naive and clueless at first, she  becomes cunning and mischievous. Has a romance with Freddy. Dialect: General American.  Vocal range: A3‐ F#5  

Andre Thibault ‐ Male, 30s‐50s, Baritenor. Lawrence's French assistant. Official and mostly  serious, he has a light‐hearted nature and a quirky sense of humor. Has a romance with Muriel.  Dialect: French. Vocal range: F2‐F4  

Muriel Eubanks ‐ Female, 30s‐50s, Alto. A wealthy and attractive American socialite from  Nebraska, she one of Lawrence's victims and Andre's subsequent love interest. Dialects:  Omaha, Nebraska/General American. Vocal range: E3‐C5  

Jolene Oakes ‐ Female, 20s‐30s, Mezzo‐Alto. An American heiress from Oklahoma and the  "Princess of Petroleum," she is very eager, optimistic, and energetic. Blend of a southern  firecracker and a southern belle. Dialect: Southern (severity of drawl/"R's" is open to  discussion). Vocal range: A3‐D5  

Ensemble ‐ Men & Women, Various ages, vocal ranges, and dialects. Will be playing multiple  roles, such as tourists/citizens, maids/butlers/wait staff, business roles, con artist victims, and  atmospheric individuals. There are multiple opportunities for featured/solo singing, dance, and  dialogue moments.
