Middle School players wishing to try out for the varsity tennis team have additional requirement to be eligible to compete on the team.
Download the Athletic Placement Process PDF file attached below. (Print out pages 8, 15, 16 (Form B), 17 (Form C), 18-19 (Form D) and pages 20-21 (Forms E and F).
Steps to be taken:
Contact the coach to be evaluated for skill level before you begin the process. (Typically, only players with USTA match experience would qualify to compete at the varsity level.)
Coach Detrick: detrickk@scolonie.org
Step 1. Parent permission-Download form (Be evaluated by the coach before this process begins!) Form B
Step 2. Administrative approval. Coach must provide Athletic Director with rational for moving athlete up, therefore the athlete will need to be evaluated by the coach for skill level. (Typically, only players with USTA match experience would qualify to compete at the varsity level.)
Step 3. Medical clearance. Private physician or school doctor must see the athlete and approve the maturity level of the athlete. School physician must then sign the approval. (For the safety of the athlete, the Tanner Score needs to be a 5 to compete. ) Review form C, page 17. Tanner Scale Information
Additional Tanner Scale Descriptions (Female)
Step 4. Sport skill evaluation. Coach must provide written documentation (form provided) supporting the rationale for playing at the high school level. (Form D pages 18-19)
ALL OF THE ABOVE MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE MID-AUGUST OR STUDENT CAN NOT TAKE THE FITNESS TEST. (Paper work may be turned in at the Sand Creek Health Office.)
Step 5. Take physical fitness test in the PIT/track on (Date to be determined),. on Presidential Physical Fitness test. (See above link) Forms E and F pages 20-21

Physical Fitness Test Components
Athletic Placement Process. Testing will take place on Aug 11th at 12:00pm. Meet in the PIT (enter main entrance of the high school)
Step 6. Provide all documentation to Mr. Guardino when test is fully completed. No one is allowed to tryout (Aug 17th) without completing the entire process! (Page 8)
Coach Detrick recommends that a family considers the following before proceeding with the process:
1. Review the components of the athletic performance test. Athletes that do not match or exceed the minimum requirements, may not qualify to be on the team.
2. Review the maturity requirements to be eligible for the team. (Tanner Score must be a 5) Tanner Scale
3. Determine if the athlete is "match ready" (For example, knows USTA tennis rules, has a consistent serve and reliable strokes.)
4. Review the transportation challenges that may arise getting to CCHS for matches.
Parents and athletes also need to consider the transportation challenges that arise as a result of not being a student on the CCHS campus. For away matches, the bus typically departs CCHS (near the MUG) at 2:45. Parents may need to transport their daughter from the middle school to the CCHS for away matches. Parents also need to verify that transportation from the middle school to the high school has been arranged for practice and home match days.
Should a middle school athlete arrive before 3:30 at the CCHS campus on practice and home match days, families need to be aware that supervision by the coach will not be available.
2015 "Sports Shuttle"
Shuttle Bus # 21 departs Sand Creek @ ______ arrives at CCHS by ______.
Shuttle Bus # 21 departs Lisha Kill @ 2:45 arrives at CCHS by 3:10.
There is also a shuttle from CCHS to Sand Creek (Not relevant for our team)
Parents: If the departure time from CCHS to away matches is before the expected arrival time to CCHS, parents will have to provide transportation from the middle school to CCHS.
Why does this process exist?:
The intent of Selection/Classification is to provide for students in grades 7 through 12 a
mechanism allowing them to participate safely at an appropriate level of competition based upon
readiness rather than age and grade. Students do not mature at the same rate and there can be a
tremendous range of developmental differences between students of the same age. The program is
not to be used to fill positions on teams, provide additional experience, provide a place for junior high
students when no modified program is offered, or reward a student. Instead, it is aimed at the few
select students who can benefit from such placement because of their level of readiness. It will also be
fairer to the other students on the modified teams.
*“A Board of Education may permit pupils in grades no lower than seventh to compete on any
senior high school team, or permit senior high pupils to compete on any teams in grades no lower than
seventh, provided the pupils are placed at levels of competition appropriate to their physiological
maturity, physical fitness and skills in relationship to other pupils on those teams in accordance with
standards established by the Commissioner.” – Commissioner’s Regulation Section 135.4
