Science Week 2022

Our pupils absolutely love STEM activities and every year, Science Week is one of the most popular weeks of the year. The following were some of the activities that pupils got involved with:

Ms Moriartys class

Ms Gleesons 4th and 5th class

For Science Week 4th & 5th Class made balloon rockets. We tied a string to a chair and placed a straw on the string. We taped an untied, inflated balloon to the straw. We let go of the balloon and watched it travel across the classroom. As the air was released from the balloon, it created a forward motion called thrust. Thrust is a pushing force created by energy, in this experiment thrust comes from the energy of the balloon forcing the air out.

We also examined how plants drink by placing celery in a solution of water and red dye. After 24 hours the leaves of the celery plant turned red. The celery takes the water up to the top to the leaves through capillary action.

Ms Molloys Jun Infants

The boys and girls from Jun Infants had a great time at the 6th class science fair and were so impressed with all of the experiments on show. They also did the ever popular dancing raisins experiment in class.

Ms Dermodys Sen Infants class

In Senior Infants, we visited the hall to learn about energy and how to conserve it from Paula and Guzzler. We also visited the 6th class science fair which we really enjoyed. In class we did 3 experiments: dancing raisins, rainbow skittles and the coca-cola and mentos experiment.
