Types of Work-Based Learning Opportunities

Students can experience work-based learning through three Co-op Programs.

  • Job Shadows - Job shadows are short, one-time visits (usually about two hours) to a company in your career sector you are interested in. It's a chance to explore various aspects of your career path as well as to explore actual companies in our area. Many times job shadows lead to other work-based learning opportunities.
  • Unpaid Work Experiences - An unpaid work experience is also called a "Career Work Experience" or CWE. A CWE provides an opportunity to gain a better understanding of specific career options through short-term (usually 30 hours), unpaid work experiences. The time at the work-site can be over a couple of days or over a longer period of time with as little as one to two hours per week at a site. The CWE is an opportunity to apply the skills developed in the classroom through real-life work-experiences. A 'Career Work Experience' contract is required to be completed before beginning work. Students are expected to fill out a journal entry after every shift worked.
  • Paid Work Experiences - A paid work-experience is also called a "Career Technical Experience" or CTE. Students are actually employed by the company. Although a CTE experience can be as short as a week or two, they are more commonly a semester or even year-long placement. CTE students often go right into full time employment at the company they are working for after graduating high school. A 'Career Technical Experience' contract is required to be completed before beginning work. Students are expected to fill out a journal entry after every week worked.
