Beware of scams. If you have to pay a fee to get money to apply for a scholarship, it's probably a scam.
The FAFSA is the gateway to the largest source of financial aid.
You have to do the FAFSA because it's the first step to getting federal, state, and college-based financial aid, including grants, and loans. Even if you don't think you'll qualify, filing the FAFSA is important because it determines your eligibility for need-based aid, makes you eligible for federal loans, and can provide access to other state and institutional scholarships and aid.
When filling out a scholarship application remember that neatness, thoroughness and presentation count. Your application is often the only way that a scholarship committee will know you. The more complete and clean it is, the better your first impression will be.
**Do not forget to send a thank you note if you receive a scholarship**
