Frequently Asked Questions
These are some of the frequently asked questions from our KOM for anyone who missed it.
1) Why are we using MS Teams instead of Zoom?
MS Teams is the only option for us at HMG due to our strict security policy. We understand that it can be confusing but please bear with us!
2) Are there specific outcomes that HMG expects from this program?
At this moment, we are still trying to explore new concepts and ideas. We are looking forward to seeing your output during midterm and final reviews, but we are also as much interested in your design process and methodologies.
3) What was the motivation to research future city in collaboration with a university?
This collaboration was first inspired by our Chairman who had great interest in the study of nature, especially insects. (Link to Bloomberg article: Insects Help Hyundai Heir Design Cars of the Future - Bloomberg) Working in an organization like ours can often mean that we encounter restrictions and limitations internally. This research collaborative will be a great opportunity for us to gain fresh insight from students.
4) What are some future city projects currently/recently being conducted by HMG?
In the very beginning, we would like to shy away from introducing too much about HMG's business portfolio because we don't want to limit creativity. But we can definitely schedule a separate session to introduce our future city related business portfolio if anyone wants to hear more about it.
For any additional questions, please feel free to ask me: hn.kim@hyundai.com.

I would like to share what we usually mean when we talk about future/smart city business at HMG. We usually categorize future city related projects into three business types:
1) Proof of service concepts: to review a specific technology domain (e.g. robotaxi, urban air mobility, purpose built vehicle);
2) Service solutions: to provide a solution using a number of technology domains which can address certain pain points;
3) Smart city development: to partake in the overall city development - from land and estate to city planning and service operations.
There are two main approaches to future city development, and both are in HMG’s business portfolio.
- Brownfield: “build around an existing structure” (adding new solutions to existing infrastructure);
- Greenfield: “land that has never been developed” (engineering and constructing new infrastructure).

Q : Have you heard about Altruistic Energy or system and its application in real world? A : Very Interesting topic. To be honest, I’ve never heard about ‘Altruistic’ terminology but I know what you mean. In my understanding, I guess the point you is ‘connectivity’. We can find those kind of concept around our biz. For example, Connected car and connected building are good cases. Every car will communicate each other for safety, convenience and even something to enjoy in the car by sending information like driving data, road condition, traffic data to other cars. These data will affecte to other driver’s next behavior. And these next behaviors affect to future mobility and city. (eg. Tiger -reckless driver, monkeys & deers – other drivers, alarm-data)

Q : I am thinking about source distribution and (re-)allocation in the future car and city, What do you think of it. A : As you know, manufacturing car & product affect to environment negatively. (CO2, water pollution..) So many car makers and mobility companies are preparing their new business as MaaS. (Mobility as a service) I heard that car’s frequency of use these days is under about 20%. (It means current car just is in parking lot most of time. So, starting point of this biz is here. I hope below key words help you get answer.. (Other key words : Caas, Maas, car sharing, car hailing, subscription service)

Q: To your knowledge, what are some environmental / city management-related problems Korea or some of its cities encounter? For example, natural disasters, garbage management, etc.
A: Delivery system is pretty amazing in Korea. Coupang (korean Amazon) is one of the most representative service platform as a fast delivery. Depending on the active delivery system, Package waste is enormous, especially in this situation of Covid-19. Packages that include basic packages and refrigeration functions are larger in volume. Consumers also feel environmental guilt by receiving unnecessary packages.
That is one of the social environment problems and we need to think about that.

I'll give some information about your questions.
Q: Currently, we are trying to understand what sort of problems exist in Korea regarding mobility and traffic. Whether it be lack of space for parking, traffic jam, or accident rates. What are some problems you encounter or consider important in Korea?
A:One of the issue in Korea regarding mobility, Electric kick-board accident. Electric kick-board is very popular among young people (Students, 20's) and delivery people as a near-field mobility. There is a mix of e-kick-boards on the pedestrian road. There is no way to warn or alarm, so we bump into each other or have big or small accidents.
And another problem is is parking issue. There are no limit to put that after they reach destination. Some people just throw away it disorderly. In the near future, new types of mobility will become more popular and serviced. It's important to maintain and storage them.
