BIO
Sara Eichner is an artist, designer and cartographer focused on data driven stories. Combining design with GIS and data she transforms complex technical information into welcoming and visually rich presentations and narratives. Her work utilizes visualization strategies that prioritize clarity without obscuring or undermining complexities behind the data. She has a deep interest in using these skills to support environmental conservation efforts. Recent clients include the Hudson River Foundation, the NY State Department of Conservation, the NYC Department of Transportation and Etsy.
In addition to her background in cartography and design, Sara has a Masters of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from Syracuse University. She has exhibited her work in New York City and other parts of the US from 2000 through 2020. Using an analog practice of painting and drawing Sara’s work has explored perspective, pictorial space, and grids through architectural detail, pattern and algorithmic systems. She brings this background as an artist to her work with cartography and design and especially to her role as an organizer of the annual Data Through Design exhibition in New York. Helping to shape and develop this annual exhibition bridges the two parts of Sara’s professional life and brings them together in an exciting milieu with a great deal of potential for art and data.
Sara teaches Spatial Thinking, GIS and Design at Pratt Institute in the School of Information as well as the Pratt School of Continuing and Professional Studies.
