Energetic Systems
Assignment 1.3
Assigned: Thursday 3/4
Due: Tuesday 3/16
Visualize:
Working as individuals or groups, select one of your three systems for further, in-depth research.
Research and experimentation methods can vary from more traditional forms of drawing, modeling, and diagraming, to scenario-building, animating, augmented and virtual reality visualizations, and other dynamic media forms. Consider how digital technologies (such as grasshopper and MODI – workshops forthcoming) can be used to both further develop the research, as well as expand our definitions of how natures and technological research methods interact.
Based on the system that you select, consider how you can identify a specific aspect of energy relationships, productions, flows, mechanisms within the system at a specific scale. This will allow you to develop in-depth research on specific forms of production, and connect it to either smaller or larger scales as you work. This work (including process work) should be documented and structured on your research website for the course.
A principal theoretical issue to consider is: what is the relationship between technologies (as tools of representation and understanding) and natural systems? How do technological means (digital modeling and prototyping, creating scenarios) affect the inputs/outputs of research into natural systems? What is the hypothesis about the role technology plays in building, analyzing, preserving the supposed systematic order of nature?
Write:
All research is driven by questions: how something works, why a structure appears the way it does, why certain relationships form in particular ways at particular scales, etc. Formulate a primary research question that is driving your work and interests.
In our case, the website is the method by which our research will be disseminated to a larger audience. As such, it is imperative that the website clearly communicates research questions and areas of interest, and that information is organized so as to elucidate clear responses to these questions. After 3/11, meet with Quinn to discuss how this research question, ancillary research text, footnotes, captions, etc are integrated into your website. Primary focus will be on "key words" used throughout.
