Rachel Soo Hoo Smith's bio
A Ph.D. candidate at the Mediated Matter research group in the MIT Media Lab, Rachel hunts for ways to augment human-made materials with biological or living functions. Termed Hybrid Living Materials, this research focuses on developing functional interactions between digital fabrication platforms (i.e., 3D printers, weaving machines) and engineered biological systems, with an aim to create cooperative and resilient new synthetic ecologies. She holds a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Virginia, and has experience ranging from co-founding the medical startup PhageFlag to develop a democratized, hand-held diagnostic for bacterial diseases, and working with the UVA Transational Medicine Program to factor humans into hospital design. She gets her energy by exciting others about design and revving people up about the potency of their own ideas.
