Year 6 te reo Māori
Kōrerorero/ Tuhituhi – Extension work
Outcome: to engage students in directions in te reo Māori, and encourage speaking in te reo Māori with fluency, accuracy and clarity, and writing with accuracy.
Learning strands: Mātakitaki (observing) Kōrero (speaking) Whakarongo (listening), Tuhituhi (Writing)
Learning method: The Kaiako will write a series of sentences and model the sentences in terms of pronunciation to the students. The lesson will look at the usage of “Ko, ia, He, nō reira and He pai ki ahau” as a part of their mihimihi (greeting). The Kaiako will display a series of sentences for students to fill in the gaps. The Kaiako will ask the student to recite the school karakia or a karakia of their choosing and recite it by themselves in front of their peers before their mihimihi.
The students are asked to explore 4 activities/sports, they like to do, and add them to their mihimihi and write these examples into their work books without assistance, which will be the outcome after a few lessons. The Kaiako will look to check the student work for accuracy of their writing skills.
