If labels are used well, they create a track record or portfolio or record of learning of all the work posted online by an individual student.
So the most important instructions about this are:
Ensure all posts are labelled with the name of the student responsible for the content.
If more than one student was involved in a group activity, separate their names by a comma.
Be ruthlessly consistent with name conventions eg Sione, Sione. , Sione M, Sione R3 might be the same child to you, but to Blogger those 4 naming conventions represent 4 different people!
When the student moves to a new class the next year, it is easy to link back to all their work from the previous year/class.
Here are the steps:
Locate a piece of work from the previous year (or if their name is in a Labels gadget on the sidebar find it there)
Click on it and in the URL bar you will see their unique URL from that blog
eg http://kpetv.blogspot.com/search/label/Joshua
As you can see from the URL, you could shortcut the locating process by figuring out the URL system
ie http://nameofblog/search/label/kidsname
Now create a new post for that child in your blog.
Either make a post specifically to point people back to the work from last year
Or, when the student posts their first piece of work, at the bottom of the post write something like "In 2010 Joshua was in Room 17. Click here to see all his fantastic work from 2010".
This presumes you know how to:
Copy a URL
Create a link
highlight the words in the text, find the work LINK at the top of the post, click it, paste in the URL, save
It is never too late to do this for your children!
You can go back to their first post
Click <Edit Post>
Add the label /record of learning / portfolio link to the bottom of the post
Click <Publish> again
